Champions Shels off to winning start
Shelbourne put Bohemians to the sword with a 1-0 score-line today in Tolka Park, fittingly captain Pearl Slattery bagging the reigning champion’s first goal of the 2022 WNL season.
The Dublin derby may have appeared to be becoming a stalemate as frustrations and tensions rose and it took until the 74th minute for the deadlock to be broken with a Noelle Murray assist putting a header on a plate for the skipper.
Although Bohemians put in a solid defensive effort, both outfits struggled to apply their shooting boots today and will be looking to improve in that aspect in the coming games.
The Reds set their intentions straight from early on when Jessie Stapleton hit the crossbar at the end of a Jess Ziu attack within three minutes of kick off, but it was to remain a difficult encounter for them trying to break the final third thanks to some stellar defensive work from Abbie Brophy and new signing Katie Burdis.
Both groups adapted a long ball tactic early on, with Megan Smyth Lynch and Murray tenacious for Shels but with little attacking options appearing for them to link with in the box.
Likewise Fiona Ryan and Sinead Taylor made a myriad of attempts bombing down towards Amanda Budden in the host’s net, but to no avail.
Halftime yielded a 0-0 scoreline and both fans and teams alike left wanting for more intensity in the battle.
The substitutions then began to rain down on Tolka Park, with Anne Marie Byrne and Lisa Murphy coming in for The Gypsies and Abbie Larkin, Gloria Douglas, Amanda McQuillan, Katie Lovely and Jemma Quinn rolling on for Shelbourne.
As full time drew near the desperation in attack became clear for both units, and a Murray corner was to be the difference. After a shuffle in the box Slattery rose highest to slam the ball into the back of the net and send the ground rocking with delight to victory.
Bohs clash with Athlone Town next time out, while last year’s league and cup winners come to blows as Shelbourne and Wexford meet in Ferrycarrig Park.

The Reds took all three points on the three occasions the teams met last year, the latest of which was a 3-1 display at the Oscar Traynor Centre in November. There Jess Ziu struck twice and was helped along by a Jessie Stapleton goal too to cancel out Lisa Murphy’s earlier net.
Noel Kings outfit will have champions league and cup commitments alongside their league adventures and so signings Amanda McQuillan, Megan Smyth-Lynch, Aoife Kelly, Kate O’Dowd and Jemma Quinn will all look to aid their team depth. Bohs on the other hand have poached sensational talent from their Women’s National League counterparts, welcoming Rachael Kelly, Katie Burdis, Ciara Maher, Fiona Ryan, Kira Bates Crosbie and Sinead Taylor to the newly christened Dalymount Park presiders.
The Dublin Derby duo have both strengthened their reserves ahead of the 2022 season and will look to start their journey this year as they mean to go on, with a victory.
