Diallo Dials In Winner To End Nine Year Wait

Derry City progressed to the second round of European football for the first time in nine years, with a comfortable 1-0 victory over HB Torshavn at the Ryan McBride Brandywell this evening in the First Qualifying Round of the UEFA Conference League.

A 23rd minute header from Sadou Diallo from a Michael Duffy was enough to seal the win for the Candystripes as they progress to face Finnish side KuPS in the next round.

Derry had been the better side throughout the entire game with Michael Duffy fast footwork in particular causing trouble for the Faroese side at every opportunity down the left hand side.

After twenty minutes Paul McMullen had the first real opportunity when a deep cross from Duffy found him unmarked at the back post but with almost too much time he found his header going high over the crossbar.

Moments later Cameron McJannet almost opened the scoring with a looped header at the end of a little head tennis but Torshavn keeper Mork was able to push the ball over the bar for a corner. Duffy’s centre from the dead ball would find the head of Diallo who guided it inside the near post to give Derry the lead goal.

Derry had a number of opportunities in the remainder of the first half with Ben Doherty and Jamie McGonigle not able to get their strikes on target to the relieve of Mork in the Torshavn net.

The second half continued much like the first with the home side enjoying the majority of the possession and territory and they nearly sealed the victory when a long ball fell perfectly to Jamie McGonigle but after taking a decent first touch he was unable to get the ball past an advancing Mork.

Duffy continued to great havoc for the Irish side and the introduction of Patrick McEleney and Brandon Kavanagh added a fresh impetus to the Derry attack.

The Faroes did almost grab an equaliser during a purple patch with ten minutes to play. A flowing move found the ball at the feet of Adrian Justinussen who made Brian Maher pull off a stinging save to keep the home side ahead.

The visitors threw every at Derry in the closing stages but were unable to find a way through as Ruaidhri Higgins men progressed to the next round of the Conference League.
