Early goal gives Derry win
Waterford’s miserable relegation threatened campaign continued as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Derry City.
Ronan Boyce’s early goal was the difference between the two sides in what was a tense affair at RSC Waterford Stadium.
The precious three points for Derry moved them up to seventh and seven points clear of Waterford who remain bottom.
Derry manager Ruaidhri Higgins impressive tenure continues as his side picked up their third straight away victory, and notably secured their first win away to Waterford since 2007.
The visitors took the lead after just two minutes as Will Patching continued his impressive form by picking up his sixth assist of the season, picking out Boyce from a free kick who headed home.
Derry continued to dominate proceedings early on as they went close through chances for Eoin Toal, Patching and James Akintunde.
Just before half time, Waterford had their first chance of the match through Shane Griffin who produced a decent effort from a free kick that forced a brilliant save from Derry goalkeeper Nathan Gartside.
On the other side of the break, Derry had a penalty appeal waved away by referee John McLoughlin after Patching went down in the area.
The creative midfielder appeared to have gone down easy and a second yellow for simulation looked on the cards, but McLoughlin opted for a no call.
Adam O’Reilly then went close for the hosts, but his free header sailed over the bar, which proved to be a costly miss.
Waterford upped the tempo and desperately tried to find an equaliser as they dominated possession but were unable to create anything to seriously threaten the Derry goal.
Both clubs are in action again on Monday, Derry host St Patrick’s Athletic at 5:45pm, whilst struggling Waterford host Finn Harps at 7:45pm.

Waterford come into the game off the back of a 7-0 defeat to Drogheda United two weeks ago, in which they were forced to field a U-19 team due to their Covid-19 positive tests. Last week, Waterford were not in action as they forfeited their game against Sligo Rovers because of their positive Covid-19 case in the camp, the week before.
The hosts have endured a miserable campaign thus far, picking up just six points from a maximum 30, having won just twice this season. New manager Marc Bircham is their fifth manager in the space of 12 months and is faced with the difficult task of keeping Waterford in the league but knows a win tonight, would go a long way in helping the survival bid.
