Match Report

Byrne snatches win for Cabo

Cabinteely snatched all three points at the death against Cobh Ramblers, in a game that had very little quality at Stradbrook Road this evening.

The first half was a very dull affair indeed, but in the second half both sides upped the tempo.

With chances traded, it looked destined to be nil-nil. However, a free-kick into the box from Cabo found Jem Campion. The youngster showed great composure to find Mitchell Byrne who couldn’t miss.

The single Byrne finish secured the points for the home side.

There were very few moments of any note before the break. Chris O’Reilly’s deflected shot early on provided the best sight of goal for either team. The Rams winger darted in behind the defence and forced a great save from Adam Hayden in the home net.

The pattern of the first-half made it a very difficult watch. The number of aimless long balls got higher and higher. The midfielders for both teams could have taken the half off.

Stuart Ashton and Pat Devlin must have had a stern word or two at half-time, as the play became much improved. The game opened up, and the ball moved from end to end, and most importantly, not in the air.

Ian Turner and Killian Cooper were a handful for the Cabinteely defence, but it was the Stradbrook Road outfit that would have the pick of the chances. Ben Hanrahan’s low shot slid just past the far post, and Mitchell Byrne repeated the feat only minutes later.

With time ticking on, and not too much threat of anyone opening the scoring, Byrne had other ideas.

Substitute McPhillips whipped a set-piece to the back stick, forward Campion controlled the ball, then slid a pass across the face of goal. With Ramblers ‘keeper Sean Barron frozen, Byrne was positioned perfectly to fire the ball into an open portion of the goal.

The Claret and Blue Army did threaten to spoil the party late on, as Turner went through one-on-one. McPhillips dived in to heroically protect his goal, and the points were safe.

This win puts Cabinteely into a good run of form and will allow them to put some pressure on the top sides. For the Rams, it’s a gutting loss, and with Cork City winning, it looks like they’re in danger of slipping down the table.

  • 46'

    And we're back underway!

  • Patience is the key word for both manager's team talks. It's been a long-ball fest and a lot of the time the midfielders may as well not be on the pitch. Someone needs to slow the tempo down and try and progress up the pitch in a less rushed fashion.

  • 45'

    Half-time: Cabinteely 0 - 0 Cobh Ramblers

  • 45'

This game has had very little quality. The possession has been traded back and forth via inaccurate long balls.

  • 38'

Marty Waters has Cabo's best chance of the half. The ball comes to him in the air, he controls it and volleys. His strike is saved well by Barron.

  • 37'

Naythan Coleman picks up a yellow card for a heavy challenge on Waters.

  • 30'

Lee Devitt has a go on the volley, but it's high and wide.

  • 28'

Adam Hayden gets away with one. A corner comes in. Under pressure the Cabinteely 'keeper drops the ball. But a free-kick is given.

  • 22'

Killian Cooper does well in the box and lays the ball off for Jake Hegarty. His shot is blocked wide.

  • 21'

Both teams have been very poor so far. Too many aimless long balls and sloppy in possession. Sean Barron has probably had the most touches of any player.

  • 14'

Hanrahan puts pressure on Sean Barron when the Cobh 'keeper has the ball at his feet. Barron looked uncomfortable and had to boot the ball out of play unconvincingly.

  • 11'

Cobh have had the better of the opening ten minutes. Chris O'Reilly looks like a real handful. The Cabo defence are struggling to tie him down when he gets on the ball.

  • 6'

Dean Casey gets in behind the defence with a chance to cross, but he's offside.

  • 3'

Cobh have the first chance of the game, as O'Reilly is played through. His shot takes a deflection and is well saved.

  • 1'

    Ben Hanrahan gets us underway.

  • Stuart Ashton has very few options to pick from the bench. The Rams already have a short bench with only six players, but two of those six are Goalkeepers.

  • Cobh Ramblers team news: One change has been made to the side that was thumped 4-0 last time around, Jake Hegarty comes in for Charlie Lyons.

  • Cabinteely team news: Luke McWilliams coming in is the only change to the team that won 2-1 last time out. Vilius Labutis is the player to drop out.
