Sub Dean delivers for Treaty
A brace from substitute Dean George saw Treaty United defeat Athlone Town 2-0 at the Markets Field on Monday evening.
Introduced for the injured Kieran Hanlon in the opening half, the number 10 pounced for two poacher-like goals either side of the interval to seal a crucial three points.
A 42nd minute strike from substitute from George opened the scoring before his second effort, just short of the hour mark – sealed the contest.
George, who had often operated wide left, replaced the injured Kieran Hanlon just minutes before he broke the deadlock. He pounded on a rebound after Schlingermann had denied a quality Matt Keane header.
Treaty boss Tommy Barrett stuck with the same starting XI that secured a Munster Derby victory over Waterford ten days ago. Sluggish to start, United gained control after 20 minutes and were able to grind down Martin Russell’s charges.
Athlone buoyed by their first point of the season last Friday, started brightly before retreating into a defensive shape that looked some bit solid. They played on the counter attack and were unlucky not to open the scoring when Youri Habing hit the crossbar from 35 yards.
That was as good as it got for the visitors who were second best for the reminder.
With it 1-0 at the interval, Treaty doubled this lead when George was sharpest in the box again. He stroked home as the ball found its way to him following a deflected Stephen Christopher shot. Before this, Success Edogun went close, denied by a smart save from Jack Brady.
Treaty seemed happy with their lot and were able to replace the impressive Enda Curran and Callum McNamara late on, ahead of an important away trip to Bray Wanderers on Friday. For Athlone, they are in danger of losing touch at the bottom, and continue to trail Cobh Ramblers by three points with their poor form continuing in Limerick.

Game petering out, Treaty happy to play on the counter with fresh legs in attack.
Willie Armshaw makes a great run, immediately after coming in.
George on the double! The attacker is once again on hand to tap home, this time after Christopher's shot was deflected into his path. Athlone in real trouble.
The game is in a bit of a slumber.
Great save from Jack Brady. The keeper gets up high to deny a nice strike from Success Edogun.
Dean Geroge - only on the pitch for around six minutes - opens the scoring. Wonderful cross from Christopher finds the head of Keane. He sees his effort well saved by Schlingermann but the Dubliner is on hand to ram the ball home from five yards.
Youri Habing with a rasper! He rattles the crossbar from fully 25 yards. A left footed strike, what an effort. The ball eventually goes over.
Charlie Fleming has a couple of long range efforts. The first, blocked by a defender, leads to the second, which is well saved by Schlingermann. Hanlon follows up but a crucial block from Aaron McBride denies him a certain goal.
Another penalty shout, as Stephen Christopher's shot appears to hit the arms of a defender who made the block. Excellent build up play involving Keane and Christopher.
Little to report in terms of goalmouth action. Treaty looking more likely but Athlone happy to play on the counter.
Penalty appeal for the hosts, Matt Keane races towards a through ball and Schlingermann gets to it first, he gets a slight touch as Keane goes down under the challenge.
Treaty enjoying more of the ball but Athlone happy to sit off.
Enda Curran wins a first corner but its scrambled clear by Athlone.
Kenny has been busy. A man who played for Limerick FC previously, so will be familiar with this ground.
Athlone win the first corner after good work from Thomas Oluwa, slow start to this contest. Stephen Kenny gets a shot away and it is deflected behind for another corner.
Slow start from both sides. The first shot in anger comes from Joe Collins. The Clare native zips one well wide from 20 yards.
Game on here Limerick. A decent crowd in for this one, with Treaty seeking a third win of the season.
