Cobh deliver against Liffey in extra-time in Cup tie

Danny and Nathan O’Connell were the heroes for The Claret and Blue Army this afternoon as extra time was needed to separate Cobh Ramblers and Liffey Wanderers in the FAI Cup at the UCD Bowl.

Nathan’s strike early on in extra-time and Danny’s finish five minutes from time was enough to give Darren Murphy his first win as Cobh boss.

Ramblers started the game off the better of the two sides with midfielders David O’Leary and Darren Murphy taking setting the tempo from the off. Liffey Wanderers grew into the game and had a chance to open the scoring after the first quarter of an hour.

Clayton Maher found Sean Noble with an excellent over the top through ball. Noble’s strike on the half volley went just over the Cobh net much to the relief of the First Division side.

Cobh Ramblers had chances of their own to open the scoring when Nathan O’Connell squared the ball to Killian Cooper but the striker struggled to get any proper connection on the cross.

On the stroke of half time Danny O’Connell played a fantastic through ball into Ian Turner. Turner opted to try and curl it around the on rushing Doyle but the Liffey man made a great stop to deny Turner. Neither side were able to make the break through before half time.

Cobh came out at a ferocious pace after the interval and Darren Murphy hit a rocket of a strike from 30 yards that bounced off the crossbar and back out. Substitute Ciaran Griffin was a handful for the Liffey side after he came on and almost opened the scoring when he met O'Leary’s corner but the forward wasn’t able to direct his header goal wards.

Neither side were able to make the break through during the 90 minutes and extra time was needed to separate the two teams.

Five minutes into extra time, debutant Nathan O’Connell picked up the ball just inside the Liffey half and drove at the heart of the Dublin sides defence before calmy slotting the ball into the bottom right corner past Lee Doyle to give Darren Murphy’s side the lead. Cobh thought that they had sealed the win just after the restart of extra time when centre back Brendan O’Riordan scored from close range, but the linesmen flag went up and the goal was disallowed.

Less than a minute after, Paul Mooney put a dangerous ball into the Cobh box and centre Dylan Roche fired home sending the Liffey fans crazy. Their joy was short lived as the linesmen flagged for offside and the goal was disallowed. Fionn Duggan was excellent going forward after he replaced Kavanagh in the second half.

The full back burst down the right wing and squared it to the lively Danny O’Connell who finished calmly to get his first goal for the Cork side and send his side into the last 16 of the FAI Cup and to give Darren Murphy his first win as Cobh boss.
