Kerry FC Secure First Ever Cup Final Date

Kerry FC secured their spot in the Munster Senior Cup final with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over a youthful Treaty United in Mounthawk Park.

Teahan initially gave the hosts the lead before Byrne equalised. That was as good as it got for Treaty though as McGrath produced two goals in two minutes just before the break to give the hosts a comfortable lead. Okwute extended it out to four just minutes after coming on at half time.

The finalists will now wait two weeks before finding out who they will face in the cup decider, as Waterford face Rockmount AFC on the other side of the draw.

The away side now return to bigger tasks with league action against Bray at home on Friday whilst Kerry will be full of confidence travelling up to Athlone.

Treaty United came back to Mounthawk Park with a completely changed side from the one that picked up their third league victor of the year just four days prior.

Kerry FC meanwhile named a stronger side on paper, with Udeze, Gleeson, Teahan and Kos all coming into their starting eleven.

Kerry took the lead just before the fifteen minute mark, when Steven Healy set the ball down the wing for Nathan Gleeson, the Kerry winger smashed low and hard across to the edge of the box finding the onrushing Ronan Teahan who slotted into the corner. The Cahersiveen man netting his first for the Kingdom.

The hosts seemed to be in control of the game for the first half an hour, Teahan the goalscorer had a couple of half chances but the away side found an equaliser shortly after.

Treaty United broke and caught the Kingdom out of shape, and after Leon Kirrane had his effort saved from close range by Tuta, Mark Byrne was on hand to slot home the rebound.

It was not long before the hosts regained their lead, Sean McGrath blocked down a clearance attempt by the Treaty backline and found himself running through on goal, and despite the best efforts of the away defence, McGrath could not be stopped and lifted over the on rushing keeper to find the near corner.

Just a minute later McGrath doubled his and his side's advantage on the night. Udeze found himself on the ball inside the box and managed to pull back to McGrath at the edge of the box who smashed low and hard into the same corner he put the first.

Despite their advantage at the break, Conor McCarthy turned to his bench introducing Daire McCarthy and Daniel Okwute, and it was the latter that extended the Kerry advantage just four minutes after the break. An absolutely wonderful through ball from Steven Healy set the substitute in, and Okwute smashed home past Dike in the United net.

The game was played through a yellow wind and rain warning and most of the second half saw both teams wishing for the final whistle early with the horrible wind and rain affecting their ability to play the ball around.

Treaty did not produce much in the second half to write home about, with the hosts looking more likely to increase the scoreline more than anything.

Kelliher was introduced for the injured Okwute with just over 15 minutes to go and almost immediately assisted Gleeson but his effort was blocked.

Kelliher almost got one of his own in the closing stages but his left footed effort from close range rattled back off the woodwork.

As the game fizzled out, the Kingdom would be delighted to secure a first ever final appearance at senior level, just over 12 months after they first kicked a ball in the League of Ireland.

Waterford FC will face Rockmount AFC on March 18th in the other Semi-Final, with the cup final being held in Turners Cross later in the season.
