Match Report

Success for Treaty as Kerry struggle on Shannonside

Success Edogun netted an opening half brace, to help Treaty United to their first home win of the season, as they edged past neighbours Kerry at the Markets Field this evening.

A successful evening from the Treaty number nine, a game where the hosts commanded and looked more composed in all area’s against Kerry, a result which can build confidence as they move to eight, if Longford fail to win in Harps that is.

Dean George opened for the Shannon men, despite Kerry having an opening half penalty Leo Gaxha had it saved by Shane Hallahan, Edogun netted twice to end the half on a three nil margin, with Ben O’Riordan netting a fourth in the second half.

The opening of the game was tight and compact between the two, plenty of possession with Treaty having the best of the chances, but Kerry’s defence was strong, as their best chance fell from a corner that went wide of Wayne Gutherie’s goal.

Kerry were limited in the way of chances and after Leo Gaxha was brought down by Ben O’Riordan, they won a throw in which Ryan Kelliher met but collided with Hallahan in the Treaty goal in the build up.

It was Treaty who took the lead in the tie after 11 minutes, a lovely free flowing move that saw Success Edogun and Stephen Christoper exchange some beautiful passes before a through ball opened the Kerry defence for Dean George to finish past Guthrie.

One almost became two on more than one occasion just after, before the quarter of the hour mark, Edogun fired a shot over after Conor Barry whipped a dangerous to the area, while Geoge was sent racing in toward the Kerry net with a through ball but his effort was saved well by the Kingdom net minder.

Ryan Kelliher almost had Kerry level after 20 minutes, a lovely cross into the area was met by the Kerry attacker but the fag was up, despite a terrific save by Shane Hallahan also denying a brilliant header. Minutes later Rob Vasiu delivered a dangerous ball that Hallahan gathered but looked a little under pressure.

Then game a huge game changing moment as Anthony O’Donnell was alleged to have handled in the area, as Kerry once again were looking for Kelliher, up stepped Gaxha but his penalty was saved by Hallahan, diving well to his right to keep it 1-0, afterwards Sean McGrath tried from the followup but nothing came from it.

Momentum would have swung from that goal but up the other end Treaty would make it 2-0, Edogun found space in the Kerry defence, his first shot struck Sean Kennedy on the arm but his second effort rippled the Kerry net after 26 minutes.

The Kingdom searched for a second goal but chances were few and far between, Kelliher fired a shot wide, before Gaxha curled a lovely cross on the right wing that looked like going in past Halllahan.

But the hosts were always in control, after Edogun hammered home a strike from a lovely
George cross that landed in the roof of the Kerry net, to put daylight between the teams at this stage, just 38 on the clock.

The Kingdom still went in search of a goal, but almost at the death of the opening half conceded a fourth goal, O’Donnell heading at the back post on the stroke of halftime but the flag was up and only three was the margin at the interval.

Just as the second half got underway, Gaxha almost netted one back for Kerry, but Hallahan saved well, Kelliher gathered the follow up but it was wide, at the other end Edogun rattled the crossbar as he looked for his third.

Treaty had more chances searching for more to put the game to bed, Edogun was looking dangerous but failed to hit the target, George almost had a second but good defending by Kerry kept him at bay, Conor Barry fired a low free kick that Guthrie saved, while Edogun still searched for his third but again was failing to cause danger.

The game had entered a little bit of a lull period but Treaty still looked strong and after a corner in the 75th minute, they put the tie to bed, Ben O’Riordan getting his head on the end of it to make it game over at that stage, plenty of controversy in the build up however as Gaxha was down needing treatment, signalled by Hallahan in the Treaty goal, but the goal stood.

Kerry had little chance in the tie in truth, but did show signs of life, a vocal support coming up to watch the tie in Limerick, the side facing another baptism of fire in the League but it will be another learning step for this young side.
