Maynooth pull off Cup shock

Maynooth University Town pulled off the shock result of the FAI Cup so far this year when they beat a 10-man Cobh Ramblers team 3-2 in a phenomenal game at John Hyland Park this evening.

Jackson Ryan was the hero that clinched the winning goal for the home side.

Shane Harte’s men did not shy away from the occasion as they pushed Cobh all game, even taking an early lead when John Kavanagh deflected a Sven Biansumba cross into his own net.

Ramblers would go close to replying when Conor Drinlan missed a glorious one-on-one opportunity just minutes later. However, right before the break both Kavanagh and Drinlan would redeem themselves when Kavangh delivered the ball into the box and found Drinlan who headed home to level the score.

The second-half would begin much like the first, at a frantic pace with neither side giving an inch. Patrick O’Sullivan was denied an incredible goal on 50 minutes, but Cobh goalkeeper Sean Barron pulled off an even more impressive save.

It was a quite scrappy 20 minutes that followed, with neither side being able to get much of a hold on the ball and numerous players going into the referee’s book.

It would not be until just after 70 minutes when the game sprung to life once more. Substitute Jack O’Connor cut in from the left-hand side and rolled the ball past Barron at the near post.

Once again the scrappiness entered the game. This time resulting in John Kavanagh receiving a red card for violent conduct, wrapping up a vastly mixed night for the Cobh captain.

Darren Murphy’s side would be handed a lifeline just minutes later when they won a penalty. Jason Abbott duly converted from the spot to make it 2-2 with just ten minutes to go.

Just three minutes later another deadlock was broken. Jackson Ryan slotted past Bannon to seal an incredible win for the home side.

The result this evening makes Maynooth just the sixth non-league team to reach the FAI Cup quarter-final in the last decade. Runners up in 1990, St.Francis were the last non-league team to reach the semis.
