Match Report

Shamrock Rovers leave it late to force a draw with Youths

An injury time own goal gave Shamrock Rovers a lifeline as they drew 1-1 with Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park.

A quiet opening 25 minutes, characterised by lots of effort but little creative output by both sides, was nearly interrupted by a sliding Aine O’Gorman who was inches away from turning in a Lia O’Leary cross from the left hand side, but the league's leading scorer couldn’t quite get a telling touch.

It took 33 minutes for Wexford to have their first effort on goal, but that was all they required. Emily Corbet was released down the right, getting to the byline and pulling back to her captain Kylie Murphy who struck the ball into the net to give Wexford the lead.

Rovers had a number of efforts from range, but none really troubled Claudia Keenan in the Wexford goal and the home team went into halftime in the lead.

After long periods of wasted possession, two great chances came from Rovers just after the hour mark. Firstly, Joy Ralph mistimed a free header at the back post from a lofted free kick, then only moments later the ball came through the box as Wexford failed to clear, falling to Jaime Thompson who somehow fired wide from only six yards out.

Corbet should have put the game beyond Rovers on 83 minutes, finding herself on the end of a low cross by Ellen Molloy with just the keeper to beat, but the striker mistimed her kick and the chance was lost.

Immediately afterwards O’Gorman found space for a shot in the Wexford box, but struck high over the bar with what seemed like it might be Shamrocks last big chance.

That was until the 91st minute when substitute Scarlett Herron smashed a cross into the Wexford area, which pinged off of Youths defender Lauren Dwyer and into her own net to break Wexford spirits.

The final few minutes were frantic as both sides looked like they might snatch a winner, but ultimately the points were shared between the two teams.

  • 95'

Full time here at Ferrycarrig Park as a late Lauren Dwyer own goal cancels out Kylie Murphy's first half strike as the points are shared in Wexford. The Youths will be disheartened in giving up the three points at the death but it was a much better performance than some of their displays in big games this season. Shamrocks will head home knowing they didn't show their best selves out on the pitch today and will need to regroup for their final few games.

  • 94'

Great ball by Molloy begs for a touch but no one can supply

  • 93'

The last five minutes have been frantic, both sides look like they might snatch the win here

  • 91'

Shamrocks equalise through an own goal by Dwyer to crush Wexford in injury time, a ball smashed in by Herron on the right hits the Wexford defender and flies into her own net

  • 90'

Header by Herron back across the keeper didn't have the strength to beat Keenan

  • 85'

A couple of very important blocks by the Wexford defence as they try and hang on in the few remaining minutes

  • 84'

Down the other end O'Gorman stands up her marker as shifts the ball well to get a strike off, but its way too high and Wexford can breathe again

  • 83'

Corbet misses a huge chance to put the game to bed, miskicking her effort after Molloy found her with a lovely low cross with only the keeper to beat from close range

  • 81'

Budden gets a yellow for dissent despite her pleas she was only berating her own defence

  • 79'

Herron lashes as a bouncing ball on the edge of the Youths area, but strikes well over the bar

  • 73'

Ralph escapes down the left and delivers a ball low into the box as Keenan slips, nearly allowing O'Gorman to sneak in and equalise but for some great defending by Conlon

  • 71'

The pressure is mounting on Wexford as Rovers begin to turn the screw against tired legs

  • 66'

Thompson has a wonderful chance as the ball is put back into the box after Youths attempted to break away, but somehow they fire wide from six yards out

  • 65'

Floated to the backrest and Ralph should have done much better as she mistimed her free header

  • 65'

Free kick right on the corner of the box for Rovers, great position

  • 61'

Michaela Lawrence is the first into the book after a heavy challenge in the middle

  • 60'

Lots of Rovers possession since the restart, they have to build that into constructive chances as they continue to struggle to break down Wexford

  • 54'

This would be a big win for Wexford, who have struggled against the top sides this season, picking up very few points against those they would have been hoping to be competing against

  • 48'

The away side will need to be far more incisive in the final third this half, rarely cutting through Wexford thus far

  • 46'

Rovers get us back on for the second half of this one

  • Halftime comes with Wexford Youths in the lead, a Kylie Murphy strike the difference between the two teams. It was a very even first 45, few chances for either teams, scrappy midfield battles dominated most of the playtime. But a strong run from Corbet supplied the opening for Murphy to put Wexford into the lead heading into the second period

  • 46'

Shot by O'Gorman on the edge of the area is straight at Keenan who is able to make the rather easy stop

  • 41'

Now Reynolds has a go from range for Rovers, but while the shot had the power, it lacked the direction to trouble Keegan in the Wexford goal

  • 39'

Strike by O'Kane a little more definite than her last from a similar position, but it loops over the bar and Rovers stay a goal behind

  • 36'

The was slightly against the run of play, as the tide seemed to be turning in Rovers favour, but Corbet showed the danger she possesses with her pace in behind

  • 33'

Wexford open the scoring through captain Kylie Murphy. Corbet is released down the right side where she breezes past her marker, before reaching the byline and pulling back for Murphy to lift into the roof of the net

  • 30'

The game seems to be opening up a bit more now in these last five minutes, you can expect some chances before half time I would surmise

  • 24'

Tame effort by O'Kane from the edge of the area goes a couple feet wide, but its the effort of note so far this game

  • 24'

O'Gorman is inches away from making contact with a low cross from O'Leary, as she came sliding in with the goal at her mercy

  • 18'

A kick to the face for Conlon it seems and she requires attention after the nasty collision, Ralph lucky to escape without a card for Rovers

  • 15'

Very little time on the ball out there, all the players are struggling to find the space to create at the minute

  • 10'

The teams are matching each other stride fro stride so far, particularly in the midfield battle, with a lot of turnover in possession

  • 5'

High tempo from both sides to start, feeling their way into the game

  • 1'

Fast start by Rovers who win the ball high and force the games first corner only seconds in

  • 1'

    We are underway here

  • A bright, if brisk afternoon in the Southeast today, conditions perfect for football, though the surface may be a little heavy after torrential rain in the past few days

  • The Youths should push to restore some pride in their season, as they look to rebuild for a more successful campaign next time

  • Rovers are looking to pick up three points on the road here ti add to their push for second place after Peamount wrapped up the title last time out right here at Ferrycarrig Park with a 2-0 win over a poor Wexford side.

  • Just a few minutes away from the off here in Ferrycarrig Park where Shamrock Rovers have travelled to take on Wexford Youths.
