Match Report

Rovers Remain Unbeaten Despite Wexford Fightback

Shamrock Rovers maintained their unbeaten start to league life with a 2-1 win over Wexford Youths in Tallaght this evening

Jessica Gargan got proceedings underway at the brink of half-time as she headed home a sumptuous cross from Alannah McEvoy.

Wexford responded at the beginning of the second half as a misplaced cross from Meabh Russel left Amanda Budden flat-footed and found the back of the Rovers' net.

Áine O’Gorman slotted home from point-blank range to give The Hoops back a lead that they would then refuse to relinquish.

A quiet opening half-hour saw chances few and far between as both sides were trapped in perennial deadlock, the centre of the park becoming increasingly congested as the minutes passed.

The in-form Jaime Thompson again proved herself to be a bright spark for The Hoops in the early minutes, as she got up well in the air to nearly head home a Gargan cross, her effort just lacking the pace to challenge Maeve Williams in net.

Rianna Jarret went close to putting Wexford in front as she took the ball neatly on the half-turn on the edge of Rovers’ box and drilled a shot towards the bottom left-hand corner. Amanda Budden did extremely well to get down low and paw Jarret’s effort out for a corner.

It looked to be neck-and-neck heading into half time before Rovers summoned up a huge gust of momentum that blew Wexford away. In the 44th minute, Abbie Larkin bolted in behind The Youths’ defence and fired a shot from the left-side of the box that rippled Williams’ side-netting.

Then in the dying embers of the half Alannah McEvoy weaved her way down the left wing and floated in an inch-perfect cross for Jessica Gargan who nodded the ball home to give the hosts the advantage.

As the second-half kicked off, Wexford got out strongly and drew level within ten minutes. A seemingly misplaced cross by Meabh Russel ended up veering menacingly towards the back post and lifting over Budden’s outstretched arm, The Youths finding themselves a golden passage back in to the game.

That goal seemed to elicit a sizeable response from The Hoops-who began to attack with newfound intensity. Thompson went close again with a header-her shot drawing a solid save from Williams.

Minutes later, Larkin burst down the right wing and cut the ball across the box for the incoming Áine O’Gorman who slotted home from point-blank range to restore her side’s advantage.

Rovers saw the game out comfortably from that point on, and will face another tough fixture after the international break where they’ll face an in-from Galway United at Eamon Deacy Park. Galway have managed to topple last season’s two best teams (Shelbourne and Athlone Town) in just their last two matches.

Wexford will welcome Athlone to Ferrycarig Park where they’ll look to respond with vigor after this largely comprehensive loss.

  • O'Neill on Wexford Youths: "They’re a very, very good side that have been together a number of years. I said it in the off season that they’d be my favourites to win the league, particularly when you add in the quality of Emily Corbet and Rianna Jarrett. It means they have a very sharp attack at the end of all the good build up play that they have. They’ve players of quality all the way through from Aoibheann Clancy to Kylie Murphy to Corbet and Jarrett up top. There’s real quality players there and they’re still my favourites to win it at the end of the year."

  • Rovers forward Jaime Thompson has found herself in a rich vein of form this season, backing up a hattrick against Treaty United with a player-of-the-match performance against Shelbourne. Hoops manager Collie O'Neill has spoken glowingly about the eighteen year old, saying: "She’s been brilliant. She’d been very, very unlucky not to start the first couple of games but it’s nice to see the quality that we have. Against Treaty we took Abbie Larkin off and then you had Jaime that came on. She goes to the home of the current league champions and she doesn’t look out of place; in fact, she looks a step above and she’s still only part of the Irish under 19s. She’s going to have a really bright future ahead of her. For the goal, it was a great little drive by Jaime to get past the defenders and it was nice to have Áine coming in at the back post to tap it in. It was good attacking football."
