Amechi Strikes Late To Seal Valuable Kerry FC Point
A much changed Cobh side finish their regular season with a home draw against Kerry FC who reach double digit points for the season.
Byrne put the hosts ahead just before the break with albeit a tame effort but finding the bottom corner in a game that did feel a little bit like a dead rubber affair.
Dennehy turned to his bench as his side pushed for a point that would take them to double figures, and it was Kennedy Amechi who got the goal right at the death to give the travelling support something to celebrate.
Ramblers now turn full focus to the first leg of their playoff tie against Wexford next Tuesday, whilst Kerry will reflect on a tough but historic first season of League of Ireland football.
As expected, Shane Keegan made a whole host of changes from the squad that drew with Wexford 3-3 last Sunday, with nine alterations in total, notably Jack Doherty keeping his spot in the starting XI, a surprise to some.
Doherty may be chasing that twenty goal season and was showing signs of his attempts at that early on, coming deep to pick up the ball and happy to take on the Kerry men in white in front of him. The Tipperary man did force a big save from Kingdom backup netminder Arthur Nganou, in tonight for the absent Lee Axworthy. Doherty using his bag of tricks to work an angle and force a left footed effort towards goal that did look destined for the corner but Nganou denied him with a fingertip save.
It was the home side who took the lead just eight minutes before the break. The conditions proved tricky for both sides to keep the ball down and play football, but they may have aided the go ahead goal. Cobh worked the ball into the box, a low cross finding Alec Byrne, who did well to shake off the tackle of Ronan Teahan and strike towards goal. It was not the cleanest of hits but the ball trundled towards the bottom left corner of the goal, much to the disappointment of Nganou who will feel he should’ve done better.
Ryan Kelliher had the best chance of the first half for Kerry, who began to push after conceding, the Kerry leading scorer did get a shot off from the edge of the box but found the wishful hands of Darragh Burke in the Ramblers net. Burke, making his first start of this campaign, managed to stem the flow of corners on the stroke of half time to keep his side level at the break.
Cobh came out in the second half looking to kill the game off early, and almost did as Doherty swung in a corner that fell right under the bar, the rebound fell to Larkin who could only force his effort onto the woodwork. That would be the last action for Doherty, who was withdrawn for Phillips, and will be wrapped up in cotton wool ahead of Tuesday.
As the half wore on, this second string Ramblers side showed their quality on the ball, rarely playing a wayward pass as their movement had the Kerry team chasing shadows, with very little possession falling their way.
Shane Keegan ran the bench with fifteen minutes left on the clock, Cummins, Abbott and Thibaut all entering the game, Cummins making his league debut.
Billy Dennehy turned to Cian Brosnan for his 25th league appearance of the season, 24th from the bench, as Kerry went all out attack to get a result.
Sean McGrath had a massive chance just four minutes from time, a free header in the box for the smallest man on the pitch somehow put the ball over the bar.
The pressure did not let up, and their efforts were rewarded right on the 90th minute when Ryan Kelliher created the second chance off a corner, pulling the ball back across the box, finding Kennedy Amechi who headed home from just a few yards out.
Keegan will be disappointed his much changed side could not hold on but Ramblers will put this in the book and focus on the much more important playoff tie to come.
A historic first campaign for the Kingdom ends with back to back draws, and a lot of hope for a side looking to build long term in the LOI.

KENNEDY AMECHI EQUALISES IN THE LAST MINUTE
Somehow McGrath doesn't head Kerry level, a free header from close range somehow over the bar.
Cian Brosnan on for Kerry, his 25th appearance, 24th from the bench.
The away side now really pushing for the equaliser.
Kerry work consecutive corners as they begin to find some of the ball.
McKevitt has a shot on goal, Kos did well to force him wide and close the angle, making it easier for his keeper.
Game really dying out here, Kerry are struggling to get the ball from a second string Cobh who are showing great quality.
Sean McGrath forces Burke into his second save of the night, again a shot from range for Kerry, and again easy to deal with for the Cobh netminder.
Ramblers playing around comfortably here but Kerry beginning to press high.
Kennedy Amechi in for Coughlan as Dennehy decides to go for it here. Cobh withdraw Doherty and immediately put him in bubble wrap...allegedly.
Ramblers hit the bar, Doherty used the wind to swing the cross towards goal, it fell to Larkin who hit the woodwork.
Cobh force their fifth corner of the game, as they piled the pressure on Kerry here.
Alec Byrne with a huge chance to put Cobh two up, Ramblers worked the ball well but somehow Byrne doesn't take the shot.
Larkin next into the book, for body checking Gaxha it seems.
Second half underway, O'Leary is on for Eguaibor who has on a yellow.
HT. 1-0 Cobh.
Kerry get a corner in the final seconds of the half. which leads to a second corner, which Burke does well to claim.
Ryan Kelliher works some space at the edge of the area but the shot was too central to cause any trouble.
Ramblers lead, Byrne manages to find the corner across goal after holding off Ronan Teahan.
Around the grounds there's five of the eight fixtures still scoreless, possibly attesting to the weather. Galway shockingly lead once more, Dundalk are ahead and Harps are putting Bray to the sword.
Dale Holland into the book, Sean McGrath taking a beating.
Jack Doherty flashes a left footed effort towards the top corner but Nganou tips it over, a fine save.
Bit of a tough game so far, Kerry playing their way into it.
Eguaibor into the book for crunching Gaxha at half way.
Daniel Okwute booked for a rash tackle.
First corner of the game to the home side, and the second after a shot deflected wide of Nganou's post. Kerry deal with the latter.
Aladesanusi makes a huge tackle on McKevitt to prevent him going through on goal.
Jack Doherty has a huge chance from a free 20 yards from goal, but the play was called for offside when it hit his own man.
Shockingly the referee does not play advantage as Sean McGrath was fouled by kept his balance and made his way through to goal. Kerry hard done by there.
Kick off in Cobh!
The teams take to a wet St Colman's Park in Cobh, conditions not ideal for football.
It's a wet one tonight, and the curtain is about to fall on Kerry's first league of Ireland campaign, can they end with victory over a much changed side? It's possible.
Cobh make nine changes from the starting XI that faced Wexford on Sunday whilst Kerry make just three from that that drew with Waterford on Saturday.
