Match Report

Cobh sail past Kerry in Coleman’s Park

Cobh aided their hopes for promotion as they inflicted a second heavy burden on Kerry in three days, as they prevailed in the Munster derby on the Cork coastline this evening.

Goals from Wilson Waweru and Tiernan O’Brien had them ahead 2-0 at the break, before Charlie Lyons and Liam Kervick added second half goals to put the game to bed, Ryan Kelliher notched a late consolation for the Kerry side.

Cobh move to third for the time being while Kerry remain bottom, a clinical display for the home side as they look a real contender in the promotion race.

The hosts had the dream start in the third minute, it was all possession early on but after Tiernan O’Brien put the afterburners on down the right wing, he got Cobh in a dangerous area to attack but the attack come to a dead end as Callan Scully gathered possession in the Kerry goal.

But despite the Kerry netminder who was starting his first game for the injured Wayne Guthrie having possession, Cobh took the lead, Wilson Waweru blocked down a clearance attempt from Scully trying to play out from the back, he took the ball down from the sky and kept possessions despite a heavy touch, had the skill to get past Kevin Williams who raced back to defend and finished to the net, a big error from the Kerry keeper inside four minutes.

One minute later and Cobh almost had a second goal from Lee Steacy off all people, the Cobh goalkeeper striking a long range free kick that was powerful enough to be on target at the other end of the field with Scully having to acrobatically save out for a corner.

After this the game was timid as both teams started to play around with possession, as Kerry searched for the equaliser, Cobh pressed again and Scully was out to punch clear a Jason Abbott free kick, at the other end a first shot came from Trpimir Vrljicak but it was wide.

Waweru almost found the net again in the 20th minute, a lovely ball sending the on loan Galway man in but Scully saved well to keep the scoreline remaining at 1-0 to the hosts.

Eight minutes later and Cobh would double their advantage in the tie, Kerry failed to clear a corner, Conor Drinan found Tiernan O’Brien free in the box and he slotted home past Scully into the net for a big advantage for the hosts.

For the remainder of the opening half it was rather uneventful as both teams were trying to search for chances, but despite plenty of possession either goalkeeper was not forced into late saves as we headed to the break.

Into the second half and it was a perfect start once again for the promotion chasers, Charlie Lyons unmarked at the back post rose to head from an O’Brien corner to add a third goal and rubber stamp their lead in the tie.

Kerry were still chasing the tie and mounted a comeback, almost nothing one back through Leo Gaxha, who came close to adding a sensational goal but his overhead kick came back off the bar.

Liam Kervick had an impact off the bench as the ex Waterford man came off the bench to score less than 60 seconds later, his first touch of the ball so him roll into the net past Scully as the writing was on the wall.

Kerry would have something to celebrate however as Ryan Kelliher netted late on as Kerry avoided a second wooden spoon in the space of three days, something they can build on as Longford head to Tralee on Friday.
