Match Report
A beautiful strike by Roman Asrankulov condemned Derry City to a 1-0 defeat against FC Tobol Kostanay in Kazakhstan this afternoon. This result means that the Candystripes will need to win their home leg in Tallaght Stadium next week in order to keep their Europa Conference League dreams alive. Similar to Derry City’s previous two games in the Europa Conference League, the Irish side started slowly and were under the cosh in the early stages of this encounter with Tobol passing the ball around sharply trying to find their dangerman, Serge Deble. Deble would have the first chance of the game when he pivoted to fire a powerful shot at Brian Maher from the penalty spot but the Derry stopper dealt with the effort confidently. Tobol started the game physically and an early yellow card for a hip-height tackle by Ramazan Orazov on Will Patching was a sign of things to come as Roman Asrankulov and Samat Zharynbetov would also go into the book in the first half for agricultural tackles, to say the least. It could have been four yellow cards or even a red for the home side when Serikzhan Muzhikov dived in with a two-footed tackle on Adam O’Reilly midway through the first half, but amazingly no cards were shown. The best chance of the first half created panic in the Derry City box as the Deble fired a shot which was blocked by Cameron McJannett. The deflection spun into the path of Ronan Boyce who couldn’t clear the ball away from danger, allowing Deble to get a second bite of the cherry and flashed a shot across the face of goal under pressure from McJannett and Maher. Tobol again started the second half brightly and could have capitalised on an untimely slip by Ben Doherty. Islam Chesnokov robbed the ball on the edge of the Derry City box and looked certain to score but Maher dived at the feet of the Tobol attacker to keep the sides level. The second half saw half-chances for both sides, with both Derry and Tobol trying their luck from range but causing few issues for both goalkeepers. The Kazakh side would take the lead in impressive fashion when full-back Roman Asrankulov received the ball on the corner of the Derry City box and rifled a shot off the crossbar into the top corner – an unstoppable shot. Tobol looked the more likely team to score after the goal but there were very few clear-cut chances as the game became more stretched. Michael Duffy was given a golden opportunity to level the game when a poor goal kick made by Tobol made its way to the Derry winger but he fired into the side netting, letting the home side off the hook. The game ended in defeat for Derry City, but a one-goal deficit is certainly not the worst result to take back to Ireland as the Candystripes prepare for the second leg in Dublin next week.Stunning Second Half Strike Sinks Derry in Kazakhstan

McMullen finds O'Reilly in the box and tries to square it to Kavanagh but the keeper does well to prevent a goal. Best chance of the game for Derry.
Mladovic is shown the fourth yellow card for Tobol for a foul on Patching in a dangerous area on the left of the Tobol box.
Chesnokov capitalises on a slip by Doherty and he is through on goal but Maher dives brilliantly to halt the Tobol player's progress.
A moment of panic as the ball ended up at the feet of Connolly but the Derry centre-back clears the ball.
Deble juggles the ball before his cross was deflected out for a corner kick.
McMullen has looked the most dangerous player in a red and white shirt. The pacy winger wins the first corner kick for Derry.
O'Reilly picks up the first yellow card for Derry City.
Soft free-kick was awarded to Tobol on the left of the Derry City penalty area. Derry clear the danger yet again and Tobol have the ball again.

HALF TIME: A physical first half comes to an end with neither side creating many clear-cut chances. Tobol have had the best chances in the game with Deble calling Maher into action at either side of the opening forty five minutes. A Patching free-kick is the closest Derry have come to opening the scoring but in reality they haven't threatened at all so far in this game. Second half action to come.
Zharynbetov receives the third yellow of the game for a late tackle on Duffy.
A poor delivery gives Derry City a breather. Three minutes of additional time will be played at the end of the first half.

Just like the previous two games in Europe, Derry are growing into this game. Tobol who looked so dangerous in the early stages have only looked threatening from set plays since the open fifteen minutes.
Patching is the latest player to be upended by a late tackle by a Tobol player. Although the referee has given two early yellow cards he has let a lot go in the middle third of the half.
An awkward header by O'Reilly spins out for a cheap corner kick. The initial delivery is punched out by Maher before a long-range strike from outside the box sails over the bar.
O'Reilly comes back on the pitch as Kavanagh is nailed with a late tackle. Tobol are fond of a foul to say the least.
O'Reilly is down at the moment after a reckless tackle Muzhikov in front of the referee. No card was awarded amazingly as it looked like a two-footed lunge.
Orazov nips in to win the ball and takes a snapshot from outside the box. The nippy midfielder skies his shot similar to Duffy earlier in the game as he gets too much contact with the bottom of the ball.
Mladovic heads over the bar after darting to the front post. The header was well off target.
Deble chops inside and but McJannett deals with it and concedes a corner.
The pitch is pretty sticky with the grass perhaps a bit longer than Derry would be used to. Dribbling the ball has been difficult for many of the players so far
Asrankulov is booked for taking down McMullen after a beautiful mazy run. Patching takes the free kick but the keeper punches the ball well clear.
