Bohs Breeze Past Rockmount To Reach Last Eight
Bohemians progress to the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup with a dominant 6-0 win over Munster Senior League opponents Rockmount at a wintery Dalymount Park this evening.
A brace from James Clarke, as well as goals from Jonathan Afolabi, Declan McDaid, Kris Twardek and Adam McDonnell, helped the Gypsies to secure comfortable passage to the next round of the cup.
The home side dominated the opening stages of the game as expected but were huffing and puffing in the opening 15 minutes of the match as the rain poured down.
The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute with an impressive team goal that was finished off by midfielder James Clarke.
James McManus received the ball on the edge of the box and shuffled his feet before finding the clever run of captain for the day, Adam McDonnell. The Bohs skipper laid the ball back for Clarke who didn’t take the open shot on goal for granted, burying past David Browne.
Bohemians made it two nil just four minutes later thanks to the Dublin side’s form player, Jonathan Afolabi.
Danny Grant’s enterprising work down the right wing resulted in a low ball towards Afolabi, and with the Irish striker in the form he is currently in, he was never going to miss from six yards out.
Bohemians would make it three just before halftime when James Clarke controlled the ball just outside the Rockmount penalty area before whipping a shot into the top corner to extend Bohemians' lead to three.
The conditions worsened in the second half as the rain streamed down on the players, but Bohemians were not ready to dry off.
Ten minutes into the second half, James Akintunde collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and lofted a pass to Declan McDaid. Although the pass was cut out by the combination of Kenneth Hoey and Cian Murphy, the substitute was able to dig the ball out from under their feet before scoring, increasing his side’s lead to four.
If there was a goal to sum up the conditions and the away side’s evening in general, it was the fifth goal for Bohemians ten minutes later.
A looping cross towards the back post seemed to be gathered by Browne, but the Rockmount keeper spilled the ball into the path of substitute, Kris Twardek, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
In the 85th minute, Bohemians had their sixth and it was Adam McDonnell that would grab it as the Bohemians captain whipped a free kick in from the right side of the away team's penalty area, although it looked like it may have been a cross.
Rockmount never stopped all game but there was a significant gulf in class between the two sides. Bohemians were ruthless but Rockmount also gave them several opportunities to be ruthless.

HALF TIME: Bohemians 3-0 Rockmount
3-0 BOHEMIANS! James Clarke gets his second goal of the game by curling in from the edge if the box on the stroke of halftime. A long second half for Rockmount.
One minute of added time will be played at the end of the first half.
Bohs take a quick free kick to the edge of the box to Paddy Kirk. His effort is blocked into the path of McManus who fires a difficult shot that had to be dealt with by Browne.
McDonnell smashes the post after pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Bohs follow that up with Akintunde winning a corner after slid in at the back post but is attempt was blocked wide.
Afolabi plays Akintunde through with a precise through ball but the winger is called for an offside.
Link up between Clarke and Afolabi sets up a shot for the striker but a deflection stops the strike from troubling Browne.
Rockmount have had a few chances to get out of their half and try to create something but the closest that have come to that was from a goal kick where Browne found the chest of Akinrinbola, creating space to cross but finding nobody
2-0 BOHEMIANS! Grant gets down the right and plays a low ball for Afolabi. The Bohemians strike has far too much time in the box and rifles his shot into the bottom corner, doubling Bohemians' lead
Kirk curls a cross into the box and although it evades Clarke it does find Afolabi. The striker doesn't get enough contact on the ball to cause problems for Browne and Rockmount can breath again.
WHAT A GOAL! McManus picks the ball up and sorts his feet out to lift a pass to McDonnell who has made clever a run into the box. The skipper for today lays the ball back to Clarke who passed the ball past Browne to make it 1-0 to Bohs. An excellent team goal.
Afolabi takes the ball into his feet on the edge of the box and swivels to fire a shot at goal. The Irish striker misses the target by a good bit.
Grant again comes infield with quick dribbling and picks out Kirk, but his heavy touch allows Hoey to shepherd the ball out of play.
Clarke tries his luck from range but again Browne stops his effort.
Grant cuts inside on his left and launches a shot from range but his effort curls wide of the post. Bohs are dominating unsurprisingly as the rain comes down in sheets.
Clarke makes an intelligent dart into the Rockmount box but can only find the keeper with his delivery.
Slightly nervy start for Murphy as his clearance is sliced into the air, but Browne gathers comfortably.
