Match Report
UCD edge Cabo’
UCD edged the South Dublin derby, as Colm Whelan and Liam Kerrigan found the net for the students in their 2-1 away win over Cabinteely at Stradbrook Road.
In a first half that was evenly matched between the teams, neither side had a clear-cut goal chance, although Cabinteely shaded it in terms of goal chances, creating the better positions.
UCD attempted to play long balls deep into Cabinteely territory and both keepers were tested in the early stages. The home side looked dangerous down the right wing, while UCD played very direct in what was a stalemate in the first half hour. Adam Lennon had the best chance of the first half when he hit the post.
A great chance for Cabinteely went a begging when Vilius Labutis a very strong run before half-time and in a situation where Cabinteely had a 5 v 3 situation in the box, Conor Knight hit the side netting.
The second half began in lightning fashion with both teams pushing hard to create chances. Twelve minutes in, Colm Whelan provided the difference between the teams. Cabinteely kept him quiet for almost an hour but he took an opportunity to turn from outside the area, and he shot low into the bottom left corner of the Cabinteely net to give UCD the lead.
Cabinteely reacted by bringing on subs and trying really hard to get back into the game. Cabinteely were gaining the initiative, as shown by Zak O’Neill stepping into space and unleashing a powerful shot towards goal. Cabinteely’s subs really had an impact, with players like Hendley looking dangerous on the left wing upon his introduction.
UCD, at times, looked content to sit in and hold what they had approaching the closing stages of the match. Lorcan Healy made some impressive saves when called upon. Then, in the 88th minute, wonderful skill from Daire Keane set up Kerrigan for his fifth goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Cabinteely rallied and two minutes later, great footwork from substitute Eoin McPhillips on the edge of the area saw him fire a shot to the back of the net.
The visitors won two more corners, but it proved to be too little too late as UCD clinched their sixth victory of the season.
