Match Report

Second half brace seals the deal for Students

UCD were powerful throughout, as the students remained unbeaten thanks to a 4-1 win over Cabinteely in this Southside derby at the UCD Bowl.

This was a superb performance by Andrew Meyler's charges, typified by the enigmatic Colm Whelan up front who scored a hat-trick, ensured that they were far too strong for Cabinteely who never recovered from a sucker-punch goal from Whelan in the sixth minute.

The match started at a frantic pace with both teams attacking with vigour early on as Liam Kerrigan looked dangerous for UCD in the opening exchanges, while Cabinteely had appeals for a handball in the UCD area turned away.

It didn’t take long for the opening goal of this contest, and it was certainly a memorable one from the visitors, when Cabinteely launched an attack and pushed their defence up after a long clearance. However, Lorcan Healy was smartly off his line and his clearance was nodded on by Liam Kerrigan and Colm Whelan kept his run onside as the visitors defence pushed up.

Whelan found himself in acres of space in front of goal keeping his composure and placing the ball beyond Hayden in the Cabinteely goal. Cabo tried to reply quickly when Dan Casey volleyed the ball goalwards but Healy saved it easily.

Both sides had spells of good possession, but it would be Sam Todd who would come closest to the next goal in the 20th minute after he headed a cross which hit the post.

Cabinteely were slowly growing into the game and in the 24th minute, after a bit of confusion in the UCD defence, Marty Waters curled a left-footed shot aiming for the left corner, but his shot hit the post.

Dean Casey made a very intelligent run in behind the UCD defence. However, his attempted looping header over Lorcan Healy is caught by the students keeper. Unfortunately, for Cabinteely, that would be as good as it got.

In the final minute of the half, a wonderful pass from Donal Higgins, on his first start this season, placed Whelan through on goal and the most clinical striker in the division made absolutely no mistake as he found the net for the second time in this game.

The Kilkenny man began the second half brilliantly. Boore passed a wonderful ball placing Whelan in behind the Cabinteely defence, and he turned back around the defender to create an angle and curled it to the bottom right corner of the goal to ensure a hat-trick.

Cabinteely were quick to respond in the 51st minute, when he expertly curled a free kick into the top right hand corner. However, within five minutes, Whelan was instrumental again, this time as a creator of goals.

Donal Higgins flicked on a header into the path of Whelan and he dribbled down the right wing, cutting inside, and setting up Higgins in the penalty area to score UCD’s fourth goal of the night.

As both sides made substitutions on the hour mark, the tempo of the match changed for the remaining 30 minutes, while the result was never in doubt.
