Match Report

Dundalk on top in Louth Derby

Dundalk secured their first victory of the season and also maintained their impressive Louth Derby record, thanks to a close but well-deserved victory over Drogheda United at Oriel Park this evening.

The second goal in two games for striker David McMillan; and a first South Korean goal from Han Jeong-Woo secured the three points as Jim Magilton continues to steady the ship.

Drogheda to their credit are a side that will take plenty of plaudits and points for their efforts this season.

Tim Clancy’s team showed great promise and organisation, and only for the resolute defence marshalled by Peter Cherrie, they could have taken something from the game despite a late goal from Chris Lyons which made Dundalk sweat in the final minutes.

Dundalk will look to build on this victory after what has been a very tough start to the season for the North Louth club.

The sides exchanged early opportunities, with David McMillan and Ronan Murray having goal attempts; but neither tested their opponent’s keepers.

In a real tense battle that Dundalk edged out on possession, the home side got off the mark thanks to some brilliant team build-up play.

David McMillan done brilliantly diving low from a Raivis Jurkovskis cross, to put Dundalk in the lead – his second goal in as many games.

The Lilywhites continued to press, with Michael Duffy latching onto a pass on his chest, and he struck a great shot on the volley that Colin McCabe parried for a corner.

Dundalk continued to push in the second half for another goal, and nearly went close when Han cut in from the right-wing and into the Drogheda area. He struck a low effort that took a deflection to send it wide.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic with Cillian Phillips causing Dundalk’s defence problems with a great opportunity on goal but it was deflected over.

Dundalk extended their lead, as Han Jeong Woo slotted home from close range, thus becoming the first-ever South Korean scorer for Dundalk, as he turned the ball in following a superb centre from McMillan.

It looked as if Ryan O'Kane would complete the victory with a third goal, only for the ball to get away from him at the vital moment.

The substitute did recover it, but the angle was then too tight for him to slot home. Drogheda pulled a goal back as Chris Lyons slotted home with a cool finish in a packed Dundalk area.

It wasn’t enough as the hosts held onto the victory but for both sides, there is still plenty of work to do before they are the completed article this season.

Half Time Dundalk lead at the break thanks to an excellent goal from David McMillan. The home side looks more compact and organised than in the previous few weeks. Drogheda is a side that is very well organised and hard working. Tim Clancy is getting the best out of the side that has a great mix of abilities, they will be fine this season.

For a hefty challenge, Zahibo goes into the book.

  • And here are the teams! Drogheda out first and we suspect Dundalk will be out shortly.

  • Sonia Hoey has arrived here in Oriel Park for tonight's match. The club is selling tickets for a virtual sell-out and all proceeds go towards Sonia’s fund as she continues her fight against cancer.

  • Life is Life bellows over the tannoy here in Oriel Park. The sun is shining down on Oriel Park and all that's missing is the fans.

  • Former Dundalk player Dane Massey is back at Oriel Park for the first time since departing in the winter after making 291 appearances for Dundalk. It's his 7th straight start for Drogheda. The same number as he made in the league for Dundalk last season

  • Peter Cherrie and Chris Shields are the only two survivors from Drogheda’s last win at Oriel Park. That came back on June 1st 2012 when Paul Crowley scored the winner on 66 minutes just three minutes after Gary Shanahan had cancelled out Sean Brennan’s opener just before the break.

  • It's six and a half years today since Peter Cherrie kept his last clean sheet for Dundalk. He might have played just one game since but his team could do with one today. The only clean sheet recorded in the club's last 20 outings was in the 11-0 FAI Cup win over Athlone in November

  • There are four changes to the Dundalk side that drew in Derry on Tuesday night with new signing Wilfried Zahibo is in for his full debut as he takes the place of Sam Stanton. Peter Cherrie, Han Jeong Woo and David McMillan comes into the side to replace Abibi, Junior and Hoban.

  • It's been 188 days since Dundalk's last league win and a win tonight would be very welcome. That's just two days shy of the 190 days the club waited for a league win last year between the 4-0 win away to Finn Harps pre-Covid and the 3-2 win over Shelbourne last September.

  • It's Louth Derby Day here in Oriel Park as Dundalk FC take on Drogheda in Oriel Park. We will have the teams shortly but I'm Ciaran Callan and I will be taking you through tonight's action as it happens.
