WNL: Wexford dig deep for win over Athlone
Wexford made up for dropped points last weekend, with a hard fought 2-1 win over Athlone Town at Ferrycarrig Park this evening.
Orlaith Conlon struck early before the inform Ellen Molloy netted her tenth goal of the season, which helped the Youths take all three points on home soil.
The Southeast outfit continued their challenge for a league title, edging out a valiant Athlone who could not find the killer instinct in front of goal, despite a fantastic finish by Roisin Molloy.
Youths got off to a flying start as Orlaith Conlon found the net after 11 minutes, she sent a rocket of a strike into the back of the net, after Kylie Murphy could not latch onto a header from a free kick on the halfway line.
After the goal things started to settle down as both teams almost hunkered down, neither looking likely to score as both teams had few chances in front of either goal.
The hosts were content with a 1-0 lead at the break, having taken full advantage of a loose chance in the Athlone area, they had full advantage.
Straight from the restart it continued to look deadlocked, apart from the scoreline both teams looked to struggle in breaking the other down, but after 51 minutes Wexford doubled their lead thanks to a close finish from Ellen Molloy, she finished after a lovely cross by Freya de Mange found her in the area.
From the kick off Athlone went up the other end of the pitch and made it 2-1 seconds later, Laurie Ryan found Molloy in space and she shot from outside the box to chip Maeve Williams and find the back of the net.
The intensity certainly ramped up after Athlone pulled one back, but again they struggled to take advantage and find the net.
Wexford could have made it 3-1 but for Niamh Coombes doing well to get down and smother the danger, as that was their best chance in the latter stages of the fixture, as Athlone’s incredible run away from home comes to an end, Wexford edging a tight contest in the sunny Southeast.
