Match Report
Trio on target in Wexford win
Wexford Youth’s prodigy Ellen Molloy showcased the magnitude of her ability as her tap in and rocket free kick proved conclusive in their 3-1 win in Athlone Town Park this evening.
The referee was an apparent central character in the game as a melee of frees were awarded throughout and left the fixture as a stop start affair. However, this didn’t faze the away side who move to within one point of Shelbourne in the table following the result.
Molloy opened the scoring as she got on the end of a Kylie Murphy cross to bag her sixth goal of the season. While Katelyn Keogh equalised after the break, the Kilkenny star secured her brace when she converted her own free kick.
Ciara Rossiter then wrapped things up in injury time to get Wexford’s third mark on the scorecard and all three points.
Despite The Towns’ best efforts to contain Molloy in that she was man marked from the get-go, their bid settled as futile when she was the one to smash the deadlock with half an hour gone.
Debutant keeper Bonnie McKiernan was not solely at fault however as nothing could be done on her side to prevent the poacher’s goal and she went on to have a virtuous display regardless of what the score-line suggests.
Ellen Molloy netted her own hard earned freekick as she fired it into the top corner to make it 2-0 in the 62nd minute and sent tensions flaring in Athlone.
Lynn Marie Grant, Muireann Devaney and even the home team’s assistant manager were all given cards in the tie, and while it never looked in doubt that Wexford were going to close out the match Athlone never gave up in trying.
The final nail in the coffin for the basement side was when Ciara Rossiter deservingly powered home The Youths’ third goal following her sustained attacking threats and put her team within a point of the elusive Reds who were bumped to second in the table as Peamount regained top spot.

Kick off in Athlone Town stadium
With such a gap in the table between the two sides Athlone may see this game as a free hit, a chance to express themselves and impose themselves on the match without the fear that comes with expectations. Wexford on the other hand will want this game to be a routine victory.
Last time out in back in series four, The Youths snatched the victory with a lone strike from a Kylie Murphy penalty the difference maker in Ferrycarrig Park. The Town will be hoping a different result comes to fruition at home in Athlone Town Stadium this evening.
Third place Wexford will be looking to increase pressure on the top of the table with another win this evening. With only four points separating the top three teams and a larger gap developing in the middle of the table any slip ups or dips in form could be devastating for Youths title push. While bottom of the table Athlone will be looking to put an end to a bad streak of form (one win in ten matches) at home this evening.
