Match Report

Big second half powers Wexford win

Six second half goals saw Wexford Youths defeat Athlone Town 7-1 at Ferrycarrig Park this evening and climb to second place in the WNL.

Athlone started the game well and a great Aoife Haran trike on the half-volley saw the visitors take the lead after 5 minutes. The youths soon regrouped though and Teegan Lynch equalised for the home side soon after as Wexford dominated possession for the remainder of the game.

Another Lynch goal followed by two from Ellen Molloy, one from Sinead Taylor and a late Kira Bates-Crosbie brace put the game beyond doubt in the second half.

Both teams enjoyed spells with the ball in the game's early stages but Athlone were the side that showed more attacking intent and were soon rewarded.

When a corner from the visitors was deflected out Aoife Haran reacted excellently with a powerful half-volley driven into the Wexford goal to give Athlone the lead with five minutes played.

The Town had the momentum and continued to attack the home side, Roisin Molloy provided a great out ball down the right wing to bring the visitors forward but Athlone couldn't create another clear chance.

Instead it was Wexford that came more and more into the game and the Slaneysiders were soon well on top in terms of possession.

Teegan Lynch's runs from midfield troubled the Athlone defence and when she got the ball at the edge of the visitors' box, her run couldn't be stopped. Lynch got a shot away which crossed Athlone keeper Abbbiegayle Ronayne and went into the far left corner to equalise for Wexford on 12 minutes.

Ronayne kept her team in it as Wexford poured forward and the likes of Kylie Murphy, Ciara Rossiter and Edel Kennedy came close but the home side couldn't score and the sides went in even at the break.

The second half started like the first with Athlone attacking however it was Wexford who scored early this time.
A cross into the Athlone box saw the ball hit a number of Wexford heads before Teegan Lynch headed home her second to put Wexford 2-1 up after 51 minutes.

Though Athlone never gave up it was a one sided affair after that as the goals kept coming for Wexford.

Ellen Molloy scored a long range screamer before the hour mark and added a second less than five minutes later when her wonderful lob over Ronanye found the Athlone net.

Three goals up, Wexford showed their strength off the bench when substitute Sinead Taylor got a goal less than ten minutes after entering the field of play thanks to a great cross from fellow-sub Kira Bates Crosbie.

Within five minutes, Bates Crosbie got one of her own with a super long distance shot from the right wing that bypassed the Athlone defence and keeper.

Not content with one goal, the pacey winger added a second soon after to put her side seven goals to the good and into second place in the WNL with a comfortable goal difference on third place Shelbourne.
