Match Report

Shels and Pats share points in eight goal thriller

A contender for game of the season between Shelbourne and St. Patrick’s Athletic ended 4-4 in a night filled with high octane drama.

The result leaves Shelbourne sitting comfortably in 7th, while for St. Pat’s it is a missed opportunity as they now sit four points behind Dundalk with the same number of games played, whom they meet on Friday.

It was the home side who started the much brighter and took the lead after 12-minutes when Sean Boyd calmly converted the ball into the near corner just inside the Saints area, following a defensive mistake from Harry Brockbank who failed to clear the initial angled ball over the top.

The visitors equalised eight minutes later out of almost nothing through a brilliant Barry Cotter effort. The wing-back controlled a Joe Redmond pass before facing Kameron Ledwidge up, cutting inside, and arrowing the ball into the far corner with his left foot.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to retake the lead when Matty Smith’s effort beat Danny Rogers at his near post from just outside the box after 27-minutes.

The next fifteen or so minutes saw yellow cards dished out to both sides for little niggles. The visitors thought they had equalised for a second time when Mark Doyle prodded home inside the Shels six-yard box, but referee Neil Doyle whistled for a push in the back.

As the hosts looked set to go in at half-time 2-1 up, a Saints corner whipped in led to a goal mouth scramble before the ball fell into the net through Sean Boyd as an own goal.

Shels retook the lead for a third time five minutes after the restart through a Sean Boyd penalty, after Harry Brockbank brought down Shane Farrell. It was initially Jason McClelland who failed to win a 50/50 on the left, allowing Shels to get in before the challenge eventually occurred.

It wasn’t long before Shelbourne grabbed their fourth through a lovely strike from JJ Lunney just inside the box, to make it 4-2. Minutes later, young fullback Sam Curtis did brilliantly down the left to win his side a penalty after he was brought down by Shane Farrell. Eoin Doyle stepped up and made no mistake sending Brendan Clarke the wrong way.

After a clash of words between Pat’s boss Tim Clancy and one of the Shelbourne assistant’s that resulted in the pair being sent off, the visitors won their second penalty of the game. Again, Eoin Doyle stepped up and sent Clarke the wrong way to complete the Saints comeback at 4-4, with ten to play.

The drama wasn’t finished there with Barry Cotter first having a 35-yard free kick cannon off the post, before a Matty Smith effort inside the Saints box that went inches wide right at the death.

To top of a fanatic affair, Jamie Lennon was sent off for the visitors following two yellow cards. Following the conclusion of the game, the Shelbourne assistant who was sent off managed to get a few more words in with Tim Clancy and Jon Daly, before being led away.

As mentioned, the Inchicore club move onto another massive game against Dundalk on Friday, while Shelbourne embark on another Dublin derby when they visit Shamrock Rovers on Sunday evening.

A better spell of possession for the visitors is wasted by Lennon who passes the ball out of play. Mark Doyle has a goal ruled out for a foul on Luke Byrne. Another good delivery from Lennon for it.

  • 30'

The ball falls lovely to Farrell just outside the area but he scuffs his strike wide. Farrell does well to collect a Ledwidge delivery to the back post but McClelland does well to win back possession. Matty Smith is booked for a challenge on Sam Curtis.

2-1 to Shels and it is Matty Smith with an effort from outside the area that seemed to fly past Rogers inside the near post.

  • 22'

The game restarts following a few flares from the away end thrown onto the pitch.

  • 21'

1-1 here as the visitors equalise out of nothing. Barry Cotter cuts in from the right and his left footed effort angles itself into the far corner.

  • 20'

Farrell looks to catch Rogers out with a free kick that he strikes to the near post but the keeper does well to push it out for a corner. The set piece is taking and Sean Boyd looks as if he is going to meet it in the air but the ball slices off his forehead and out for a throw-in on the opposite side. A ball over the top flicked on by Eoin Doyle falls to the feet of Mark Doyle who runs into the box but Negru does well to get in the way of the shot.

  • 15'

St. Pat\'s haven\'t really found any rhythm with their passing since the game began. The hosts are constantly looking for the switch towards the left side of the Saints back line and playing off seconds which is where the goal came from.

  • 12'

Shels take the lead and it is Sean Boyd who opens the scoring this evening. He sticks it past Rogers following a defensive mistake from Brockbank and McLelland. 1-0 Shelbourne.

  • 10'

Pat's go down the other end and Cotter swings in a ball that is overhit for Eoin Doyle and Clarke gathers.

  • 5'

Shels win an early free just inside the Saints half. Farrell delivers to the back post but the Saints clear. The away side haven't settled into the game yet with the home side dominating possession in the early stages.
