Pats Bow Out Of Europe In Richmond Thriller

St. Patrick’s Athletic European journey came to an end in a 2-3 thriller in Richmond Park, The Saints losing 3-5 to F91 Dundelange on aggregate.

Dundelange took the lead in the 10th minute, Oege-Sieste Van Lingen finishing cooly at point-blank range. Disaster struck for the visitors minute later, keeper Didier Desprez heading the ball into his own goal in what was one of the most bizarre goals Richmond Park has surely ever witnessed.

Both sides proved unrelenting in their attacking output, second-half sub-leveling affairs with a well-taken shot from 25 yards out. It was Vin Lingen who struck again moments later, and then completed his hat trick in injury time to kill the tie once and for all.

The first half was nothing short of fireworks, quite possibly the most exciting football played on Irish soil this year. Pats probed the Dundelage goal from early, but their early work was undone in the 10th minute when the visitors took the lead.

Right-back Kino Delorge was afforded far too much space as he broke down the right wing with deadly intent, eventually looking up and squaring the ball to Ooege-Sieste Van Lingen, the number 9 producing an icy finish as he rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

The goal looked to encourage the visitors even further as they continued to bundle men forward despite their two-goal cushion in the tie, a goal-line scramble seeing Van Lingen nearly score again just moments after his opener.

The Saints were presented with a life-line in the 20th minute, as one of the most bizarre goals in recent memory played out in front of the Inchicore crowd.

A scrappy ball saw the ball fly up and just outside the Dundelange box, keeper Didier Desprez leaving his line to clear.  Desprez rose high as he attempted to head the ball to safety, instead catching it with the back of his head and sending the ball flying towards his own goal. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar as centre-back Vincent Decker stretched to clear to no avail, the ball having already crossed the goal line.

Each side refused to relent from that point on, at one end it was Conor Carty drawing an impressive double save from Desprez and on the other it was Bruno Feres sending Dean Lyness sprawling to make an acrobatic save.

Pats came out the second half the brighter side, throwing Adam Murphy into the midfield in place of Thjis Timmermans, with hopes of some added dynamism in the central channels. It proved to be an inspired substitution from Jon Daly when 20 minutes later Murphy weaved past Feres and guided a fierce strike into the bottom right corner from 25 yards out.

The ecstatic celebrations in a sold-out Richmond Park lasted just minutes as soon Jamie Lennon was caught in transition, Dundelange finding themselves with a 4-on-2 on the break. Van Lingen received the ball on the edge of the box and hammered the ball past Lyness in the bottom right to restore his side’s advantage.

Tensions rose to boiling point in the latter stages, Ismael Sidibe receiving his marching orders in the 88th minute after a crunching tackle on Murphy saw his second yellow card. Seven minutes of added time saw Pats throw everything at Dudelange and for the third of the match they were cut open on the break, Ferere bombing forward to lay it off to Vin Lingen who completed his hattrick in emphatic fashion.

Dundelnage continue their conference league journey while The Saints come crashing back to reality, playing Longford on Saturday in their first round of the FAI cup.

  • Talisman Chris Forrester finds himself in fine form, boasting 11 goals in 25 league games, insisting he’s ready to make amends for what he concedes as a poor performance in Luxembourg: “We were a bit disappointed with the game (last week). We didn't give a good account of ourselves.” Mark came up with a good goal and the tie is still there for us at the end of the day. We're fully focused on getting a positive result this week and training has been good, so overall, it wasn't great, but we came out of it with a goal deficit, which isn't the worst.”

  • “We'll put the previous performance to bed and make sure we're focused now. We know what Dudelange are like now and what they're about. They have some very good players that we need to be mindful of and we need to defend certain situations better but we're very confident we can score goals and that we can try our best to get through."

  • Jon Daly’s managerial reign has seen 8 wins from 13, tonight’s match just Daly’s second game in Europe, the coach willing the Inchicore crowd to get behind their team as he continues to make the leap into the unknown. “We know it's going to be a difficult game but we're confident going into it. The fans have been fantastic this year at home and our home record is good so we're looking to continue that on Thursday,” Daly said. “Last year the fans were fantastic here in the Mura game. They made a great atmosphere and we're looking for the same again on Thursday and I have no doubt that they will.

  • The first leg played out in Luxembourg saw the hosts dominate early proceedings, Yahcuroo Roemer and Oege-Sieste Van Lingen both scoring within the hour to give their side a 2-0 lead. A throw-in during the dying minutes of the game saw Mark Doyle snatch the ball in the Dudelange box and fire home to give Pats’ European dreams a lifeline.

  • Evening all and welcome along to tonight's match coverage of St. Patrick's Athletic vs F91 Dundelange here in Richmond Park. The Saints attempt to overwrite a 1-2 deficit and keep their conference league journey alive.
