Dundalk Book Second Round Passage Against Magpies

Two second-half goals spark joy in Oriel Park as Dundalk see off F.C Brunos Magpies 3-1 at this evening, sending them through to the second round of UEFA Conference League qualification.

Goals from Patrick Hoban and substitute John Martin before an own goal by Magpies full-back Andre Dos Santos helped to overcome their opponents from Gibraltar.

Stephen O’Donnell chose to name the same side that drew with their Gibraltar opponents in the home leg.

The home team got off to the best possible start winning a corner after early pressure on the Magpies' goal after three minutes.

From the resulting dead ball, Dundalk broke the deadlock and it was the man for the big occasion, Patrick Hoban, rose highest to head home from a perfectly placed Darragh Leahy delivery.

The game plan early on from Dundalk was clear as they launched a barrage of diagonal balls over the top in search of Daniel Kelly, who was causing the away team’s defence a whole host of problems with his pace and directness.

Kelly was also a threat for balls into the box when he found himself centrally, with him and Hoban inches away from doubling their advantage midway through the first half.

Magpies' best chance of the first half came when Jamie Coombes darted down the Magpies’ right, pulling the ball back for the onrushing Daniel Bent who could only find the chest of Nathan Shepperd.

The equaliser came in the 33rd minute when Andy Boyle stopped to head a ball clear from a cross from the right. His headed clearance could only find Magpies’ midfielder Joe on the edge of the box, sweetly striking the past Shepperd into the top right corner.

O’Donnell decided to make a change at half-time with Johannes Yli Kokko being replaced by John Martin in search of the goal to put them back in front.

Martin has been a super sub at this ground already this season and played this familiar role yet again by scoring just two minutes after his introduction.

Some brilliant link-up play between Martin and O’Kane on the left wing created the space for Martin in the box and although his first attempt was saved by Jaylan Hankins, the Dundalk substitute was alert to the chance and poked the rebound past the keeper at the near post.

The third goal that gave the Lilywhites some breathing room came in the eighty-fifth minute, when Hoban pulled his cross from the end line back toward the penalty box, only for the ball to be turned into his own net by Andre Dos Santos.

A tense game turned into a comprehensive victory for Stephen O’Donnell and his men as they march into the second round of qualification.
