Athlone Setup 2022 Cup Rematch With Shelbourne
Athlone Town ensured they would be returning to the FAI Senior Cup Final with a comfortable win over their hosts Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds this evening.
In front of a bumper crowd of 1,121 the Bit O’Red Women started brightly and had a number of early chances but weren’t able to bother Katie Keane in the Athlone goal.
Shortly afterwards it was the midlanders who were living the American dream as two first half strikes from Maddison Gibson set up the victory.
On the half hour mark Lauren Karabin was taken down in the corner of the penalty box as she moved away from the goal and the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot. Maddie Gibson made no mistake as she ruthlessly dispatched the ball to the net.
Just before the break the advantage was doubled. A kick out from McKiernan wasn’t controlled by Casey Howe and Gibson jumped in to dispossess her and drive at the home defence.
Her effort was blocked by Lafferty but the deflection merely served to lift the ball over McKiernan and the shot stopper could only look in horror as the ball settled into the back of the net to leave the 2023 finalists in the driving seat at the break.
Sligo would struggle to generate any real opportunity in the second half of the game as Athlone continued to dominate most of the play. A defensive mistake from McKiernan would give Jess Rossman an opportunity to nod home from close range after the keeper failed to control the cross and the American didn’t need to be asked twice.
Sligo native Roisin Molloy would seal the win with quarter of an hour left on the clock as she pounced on a loose ball after great work from Gibson down the left hand side. The former Bit O’Red underage star simply tapped the ball past McKiernan to send the Athlone fans wild in the Showgrounds.
Fiona McCrory had a glorious opportunity to grab a consolation strike for Rovers but Katie Keane closed down the Sligo forward and blocked her effort as her defenders scrambled the rebound away.
The referee’s final whistle ensured the Midlander's victory and they can now look forward to a repeat of last year’s FAI Cup Final pairing against Shelbourne next month.

Three minutes added time in Sligo but the result is secure for the visitors
Sligo native Roisin Molloy has added a fourth to Athlone's tally as the midlanders kill the contest with a quarter hour left on the clock.
A mistake from the otherwise reliable McKiernan as she fails to gather a corner and the ball lands on the head of Jess Rossman who nods it home from close range.
Athlone have had a few chances here early in the second half but Bonnie McKiernan has been to the rescue for them. A block on a sliced Lauren Boles clearance and then a thunderbolt from Gibson.
Second half begins here with a mountain to climb for the hosts.
Maddie Gibson has doubled her side's lead with deflected effort over Bonnie McKiernan who had no chance with the arcing effort. Athlone looking in control as we approach half time.
The crowd are really getting into this game. A number of refereeing decisions have really gotten under their skin in recent minutes.
Maddie Gibson has opened the scoring from the penalty spot as Leah Kelly is adjudged to have taken down an Athlone player in the corner of the box as she moved away from goal. Gibson sends the ball into the roof of the net.
Jodie Loughrey takes out Roisin Molloy just outside the Sligo box, picks up a yellow card for throwing the ball away in frustration.
Bonnie McKiernan has been solid in the goals for Sligo as they are holding on here as Athlone are creating chances at will.
Best opportunity of the game so far. Maddie Gibson burst onto a ball, ghosted past a Sligo defender but she can't keep her effort on target.
Athlone are knocking on the door here. Some nervy defending from Bonnie McKiernan, Sarah Kiernan and Leah Kelly has given Athlone opportunities but the midlanders can't convert.
Emma Doherty with a great opportunity as Casey Howe makes a beautiful pass through to the Donegal player but her effort is deflected wide by an Athlone defender. Chloe Singleton is there to clear the follow up change from the corner.
Big opportunity for Athlone as Chloe Singleton breaks down the left wing but her cross just can't find a team mate and Sligo clear.
And we are underway as Athlone get the game moving.
Laurie Ryan and Emma Hansberry are currently undertaking the coin toss as the crowd are beginning to make their voice heard.
Sligo Rovers will be looking towards the fire power of their forward line of Casey Howe and Emma Doherty who have hit the net five times each in the competition so far. Athlone Town have not scored in the competition this year but last year's finalists have seen off the challenge of both Galway United and Peamount United so far.
About ten minutes to the start of the game and Sligo who have made light work of Bonagee and Bohemians so far in the competition host Athlone Town who have reached this stage after two scoreless draws and progression via penalties.
The crowd is building nicely here in The Showgrounds as Sligo Rovers and Athlone Town go through their final preparations ahead of the FAI Senior Women's Cup Semi Final.
