Match Report

Athlone Ace in win over Sligo

Athlone Town put Sligo Rovers to the sword in a wet evening at Lissywollen, beating the Bit O’ Red 5-0.

Four goals from Emily Corbet and one from Kellie Brennan sealed the deal. An early flurry boosted Athlone, as three were scored in the first 15 minutes.

It took two minutes for Athlone to get up and running in this one. A throw in was poorly dealt with by Orna O’Dowd, who committed a handball. Emily Corbett stepped up and slotted in, getting what would be a wonderful evening for her off to a good start.

In the ninth minute it became 2-0. Kelsey Munroe swung in a corner and Kellie Brennan flicked it in. It looked legit at first, but a replay from behind the goal suggests it came off her hand. Nonetheless, Sligo players did not protest and the goal stood.

In the 12th minute, it was done and dusted. Jessica Hennessy played a long ball forward and Corbet ran in behind, eventually making it 3-0. Not even a quarter of an hour gone, and Athlone had the points.

Sligo did have some half chances. On the half hour mark, Paula McRory was fouled on the edge of the area and Emma Doherty stepped up. Her effort was spilled by Niamh Coombes, but the ball ebbed wide so no Sligo goal.

Corbet had a chance at a first half hat-trick. In the 37th minute, she found herself one on one and attempted the lob, but she overhit her effort.

In the 43rd minute, Katie Melly got a shot off at the near post but Coombes held firm. At half time it stayed 3-0.

Ten minutes into the second half Doherty had another chance. She found herself one on one with Coombes, but again Coombes stood firm and denied her.

On the hour mark Corbet had the hat-trick. A well worked free following a foul from Doherty saw her flick it onto Kayleigh Shine, who flicked it back to Corbet who slotted away for the Athlone fourth.

The cake got its icing in the 68th minute. Numerous Sligo defenders jumped to deal with a cross and another handball was given. Corbet stepped up to bag her fourth and Athlone’s fifth.

This means Athlone now have won three on the bounce, so they are an in-form side. They travel to Turners Cross next, with a chance of making it four.
