Match Report

Gibson on target at Athlone beat Sligo

Athlone Town made it three wins on the bounce with a 3-1 win over Sligo Rovers in the Showgrounds this evening.

Madison Gibson, Roisin Molloy and Gillian Keenan got on the board for the visitors. Casey Howe got the hosts a goal with a late consolation.

It was a tame first half for the most part but Athlone definitely looked the more threatening of the two sides. Their former keeper Bonnie McKiernan was called into action consistently and passed the test each time.

However, the first time Athlone had a clear-cut chance, they made it count. In the 35th minute, Nausica Constantini lofted the ball back into the Sligo box following a clearance and found Madison Gibson all alone on the edge of the area. Gibson took a touch and made no mistake, breaking the deadlock. Sligo will be disappointed with how much space they allowed her however.

Rovers did look threatening on the counter from time to time and particularly through Emma Doherty. Right before half time, Sligo’s #9 got by Julia Weithofer and clipped it to the back stick for Casey Howe, who just couldn’t get the contact on it. It would remain 1-0 at the half.

The second half followed the first in terms of Athlone being on top but Sligo looking dangerous now and again. It took time, but Athlone eventually got the breathing space they needed.

In the 72nd minute an Athlone corner was cleared, but only as far as Roisin Molloy about 40 yards out. Despite this, Molloy tried her luck and sent it over McKiernan into the back of the net. Despite the fine strike, McKiernan might be disappointed.

Athlone sealed this about ten minutes later. Kayleigh Shine got the second ball from a cleared corner and put it back into the mixer. McKiernan got up to punch clear but palmed it down to Gillian Keenan, who hoofed it back of the net. Once again, despite an overall decent evening between the sticks, McKiernan may wish she’d done better.

Sligo however managed to set some unexpected nerves among the visitors about sixty seconds later through Casey Rowe. Rowe simply latched onto a loose ball from about 40 yards out and her effort dipped before Peterkin fumbled it in. It didn’t change the outcome but it was one that should’ve been kept out.

Athlone host Shels next week in what should be a good game. Sligo take the hunt for their first points to Dalymount on the other hand.

  • 94'

    Full time.

  • 92'

Gibson makes a great run and squares it to Scheriff who somehow puts it over. Won't change the outcome, but she'll be disappointed not to maintain her scoring streak.

  • 90'

    Four minutes added on.

  • 82'

Goal! Rowe tries one after the ball falls to her 40 yards out and Peterkin fumbles it! Poor goalkeeping from her.

  • 81'

Goal! Gibson slams it in after McKiernan flaps at a cross. 3-0.

  • 78'

Keenan is through thanks to a nice one-two but McKiernan deals with it.

  • 76'

Scheriff makes a nice run to the byline before Jodie Loughrey sends it behind with a tackle. Sligo deal with the corner well.

  • 73'

Goal! Roisin Molloy puts it in from 40 yards after a clearance falls to her and she lofts it over McKiernan! The Sligo keeper might be disappointed, but Athlone won't care.

  • 69'

Chloe Singleton is forced off with a head injury. Hopefully it's not too serious.

  • 66'

Singleton plays Gibson through and Hansberry sends her to the ground. Ref waves penalty claims away.

  • 62'

Constantini and Howe are having a bit of a back and forth. Constantini seems vexed with Howe's physicality. Probably goes back to Howe's robust challenge that left her injured in the first half that also went unpunished.

  • 59'

Casey Howe latches onto a loose ball on the edge of the area and pokes it just wide. Good chance created by Sligo.

  • 51'

The ball is almost bundled into the Sligo net after McKiernan misses a cross, but Loughrey clears.

  • 49'

Molloy presses high and wins the ball. She plays it across to Gibson, whose eventual effort is well over.

  • 46'

    Back underway.

  • 45'

    Half time.

  • 43'

Doherty gets in behind Kayleigh Shine and looked to have won a corner, but the officials rule against her and Sligo. Causing Athlone some problems late in the half.

  • 41'

Doherty gets by Weithofer on the right and clips it to the back post but Howe just can't get contact on it. Very nearly 1-1.

  • 35'

Goal! Constantini plays a simple long ball to Gibson who takes a touch and finds the bottom corner. All alone up top, suspect defending from Sligo.

  • 33'

A Lucy Jane Grant deflects off Amy Roddy and it forces McKiernan to tip it out for another corner.

  • 24'

Doherty was almost through on the counter but the touch was all too heavy. Peterkin out to clear it.

  • 23'

Molloy receives it from Gibson from a corner and her cross-come-shot has to be tipped out of the top corner by McKiernan! Great save.

  • 21'

Gibson puts Brennan through but McKiernan is off her line and clears it. Good sweeper play.

  • 19'

Lucy Jane Grant gets in a cross to Singelton who fires right at McKiernan. Athlone looking slightly more dangerous.

  • 15'

Constantini caught late by Casey Howe. The Athlone defender is still down receiving treatment.

  • 10'

At the ten minute mark. Tame encounter so far.

  • 2'

    Athlone with some early pressure.

  • 1'

    We're off.

  • Teams are out. Kickoff is soon.

  • Conditions seem to be mild. Shouldn't have an impact on proceedings.

  • Athlone are looking to make it three wins on the bounce. Sligo on the other hand are looking for their first points of the season.

  • Both lineups are in.
