Match Report

Trio on target for Pea’s

Goals from Claire Walsh, Aine O’Gorman, and a Eleanor Ryan-Doyle brace; were enough to give league leaders Peamount United a comfortable 4-0 victory over Galway WFC at PRL Park this afternoon.

Pea’s boss James O’Callaghan will be delighted with his side’s solid performance, where they looked in no danger of losing this game once they took an early lead.

New Galway manager Stephen Lally on his first time in the dugout with the club will have been somewhat happy with his side’s second half response. They defended resolutely and saw some fantastic saves from their Slovenian international goalkeeper Maja Zajc throughout the game despite the result.

The game was only five minutes old when Karen Duggan’s lateral pass into the path of Claire Walsh was expertly struck to the top corner of the Galway net from well outside the box.

It had shades of a similar strike from Duggan in the corresponding fixture last season. A game that would start a run of a dozen consecutive wins for the league champions. A streak which shows no sign of slowing down based on this afternoon’s performance.

Aine O’Gorman and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle combined well to create an opportunity but as the Galway defence closed in on O’Gorman and limited her options, she selflessly fed the ball back to the oncoming Ryan-Doyle who stroked it past the dive of Zajc to double their lead.

Just before the break, O’Gorman would once again turn provider. Fouled near the corner flag during yet another attack, she floated the resulting free kick to the back post finding the head of Della Doherty. The youngster rose highest and guided the ball back across goal and effectively ended the game as a contest well before half time..

Defensively Galway were vastly improved in the second period, the introduction of the experienced Ruth Fahy & Aisling Meaney as part of four substitutions at the interval and a reshuffling of the defensive personnel saw them deal with the never ending Peamount attacks for the entire second half.

As well as resolute defending it took countless interventions from Zajc and a few fortunate moments for the westerners to keep their hosts scoreless through the second half. It was the 89th minute before they finally coughed up that opportunity, Zajc fouled Ryan-Doyle in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.

The league’s top scorer made no mistake from twelve yards to put the added cherry on top of a fine team performance. A four goal victory probably doesn’t reflect the dominance enjoyed by the Pea’s but Lally and Galway will be eager to build on a solid showing from their last line of defence as they try to get the westerner's season back up and running.
