Match Report

Galway exquisite in victory over Waves

Galway United picked up their fifth win of the season with goals in either half from McGuinness and Slattery.

DLR Waves had their chances in the game but two corner routines were the reason they came undone with McGuinness latching onto a loose ball to smash home with Slattery netting from a wicked DLR deflection just before the hour mark.

Waves must regroup now for the battle with Wexford next week at the Bowl whilst Galway return to Eamonn Deacy to face a resilient Treaty United next Saturday.

The opening stages of the game saw absolutely horrid conditions to play football in with torrential downpours meeting two sides trying to keep the ball on the floor and get their play going.

It was the away side who struck early, Gemma McGuinness who had been lively pulling strings in the forward line early on picked up the ball off a ricochet at the edge of the box from a failed corner clearance and her effort pinballed off a number of bodies and through Badana who was caught out by the deflection.

This was a big opener for Galway against a side who do not concede much, this strike at the time being only the fifth goal conceded for Waves in six and a quarter games of the season.

Waves started to pile on the pressure after going behind, forcing United into a number of turnovers based off a high press and finally starting to gain territory in the final third of the pitch. Eve O’Brien did well to pinch the ball back about 30 yards out but was fouled in doing so which unfortunately saw her depart for Bronagh Kane through injury.

Waves had a number of half chances as the half wore on, notably sub Kane who had two efforts at goal but not much trouble for Berlin in the United net. With the half drawing to a close Kelly would have a lot to build on despite being a goal behind at the break.

The latter stages of the first half saw Galway take a bit more control and that was vital as it settled the away side who continued with this into the second half. Just before the hour mark they doubled their advantage. A quick corner from McKey found Slattery at the edge of the box and with a beautiful chop worked the space to cross the ball in. The attempted cross however caught a DLR leg and looped into the top corner, a major break for the away side.

Coming up to the final 15 minutes of the game DLR were determined to stick to their possession quick passing style of play to try make space and break down this United side but the press from the visitors was relentless and the lack of time on the ball forced many Waves turnovers.

It seemed to be a tough afternoon for DLR Waves as is but with just four minutes to go Ireland underage International Joy Ralph had to be helped off the field of play with an injury.

Galway saw out the fixture and moved up to second in the league at the full time whistle with other results yet to determine where they will finish the gameweek but a fantastic start to the campaign for Trill’s side who were clinical today.
