Match Report

Idowu stunner helps Blues defeat Kingdom

Two quality strikes either side of the break helped the Blues wrap up the three points against Kerry in the RSC tonight.

Parsons opened the scoring seven minutes before the break with Idowu’s early goal of the month contender tying the knot on the result in a game that Kerry FC showed promise but couldn’t find the net.

Coughlan broke his goal drought in added time to add the Blues third and seal a wonderful night on festival weekend in Waterford.

A South East derby awaits Waterford on Monday night in Ferrycarrig Park whilst Kerry head home to prepare for the visit of Cobh.

As the form table would expect it was Kerry sitting into their shape and playing very compact to suspend any Waterford attacking play but it was in fact the Kingdom who had the first big chances of the game.

Matt Keane ran onto a lovely lay off at the edge of the box and kept his effort on target which stung the palms of Sargent in the Blues net. From the resulting corner, Leo Gaxha picked up the ball and his effort forced Sargent into another big save down to his left, handing Kerry their third corner. Ethan Kos’ header flashed wide of the post from this, a great succession of chances for the away side.

Waterford began to up the intensity after this early scare, and almost took the lead when Kos headed back towards his own net but Kerry netminding debutant Nganou kept it from going over the line.

The Blues did take the lead just before the break, when a breaking ball fell to Conor Parsons at the edge of the area and he caught the ball sweetly nestling a volley into the bottom left corner. Hard to argue that Waterford didn’t deserve to take the lead at this point.

Coming out of the break, Coughlan came close to doubling the Waterford lead. Seems incredible to think that he is on a goal drought when you look at his numbers this season but this chance was evident of that as his header crashed off the woodwork and into the hands of Nganou.

Kerry struggled to gain any momentum in the second half and before they could get the chance to get level, it was 2-0 Waterford.

Roland Idowu picked up the ball about 25 yards out from goal and with time and space picked out the top corner with a superb strike to double the Blues lead and almost surely wrap up the points.

Coughlan put the bow on the present as he slid the ball into the empty net in additional time to seal the victory and a wonderful night for Waterford as they move an inch closer to leaders Galway.
