Match Report

Harps break Kingdom’s Hearts with Banda winner

BJ Banda headed home deep in stoppage time to secure Finn Harps a dramatic late winner in Tralee, helping their fight for promotion.

Ryan Flood’s second half strike looked to have sealed the points for Finn Harps in Tralee, but the Kerry defender Samuel Aladesanusi rose high to head home a Cian Brosnan corner, but Banda was the match winner in the dying embers

Dave Rogers said Harps deserved the win last time they faced here, tonight they did and left with three points, a dramatic tie, Banda once again doing it late for Harps, a huge away win for Harps.

It was all the away side, they had chances forcing serious question marks of the Kerry rearguard, very little in the way of threat from the hosts, Rory Kelly making his league debut, had very little to deal with until the late equaliser, but in a scrappy feisty affair Harps prevailed.

A slow start to the game, both teams were knocking the ball around well, Sean O’Donnell and Leo Gaxha both were flagged for offside as they tried to create chances. Rob Vasiu had a great chance after cutting in from the right wing to work a goal scoring chance for Kerry, but his pass aimed for Gaxha was cut out by Scott Wara.

Patrick Ferry was quick to aim for the target following a loose ball in the area that flashed wide across the goal, but again it was an offside decision regardless. Looking to play on Kerry’s notable weakness from corners, Ryan Flood floated in a corner, Scott Wara headed at goal, it remained rising and out for a goal kick.

In the 22nd minute, Harps had appeals for a penalty turned down, Kevin Williams looked to shove into the back of Ferry, but nothing awarded from the referee. Harps had all the ball and Stephen Doherty flashed a shot from the edge of the box that had Lee Axworthy down to save.

Harps had a free given however as Sean O’Donnell was tackled by Williams, Flood and Tony McNamee both stepped over the set piece, both set piece specialists, McNamee struck low and hard around the wall on the right aimed for Axworthy’s near post, the Kerry shot stopper down fast to push away for a corner. Flood whipped in the corner, Wara headed it over once more.

On the half hour mark Kerry tried to clear a corner but failed to do so, but in the finish the ball found Ferry, Axworthy down to his left to save. From the counter Kerry attacked better, but Harps had bodies back, Gaxha looking for a chance at goal but the effort instantly blocked down.

Harps had the ball in the net after 35 minutes, Ferry flagged offside, O'Donnell was through on goal with Axworthy, he left it for Ferry but he strayed offside and the game remained scoreless. Massive let off for Kerry that the Harps forwards had a mix up.

O'Donnell with minutes left in the half played Jamie Watson down the right wing, but his strike at goal was left and wide, maybe a little rushed or scuffed, but Axworthy was stretching however to his far post. The visitors all over the hosts heading to a scoreless half time break.

Harps had an early chance to start the second half, Doherty crossed to the back post where Watson could gather, he crossed into the area, but Ethan Kos got a deflection for Axworthy to grab the ball.

Kerry started to wake up in the half, Ryan Kelliher moving out to the left wing crossed to the box where Sean McGrath shot at goal, Harps league debutant Rory Kelly was quick to palm the effort away.

The visitors would take the lead in the 53rd minute, the ball breaking to Flood as Kerry tried to clear the danger, he shot low and hard with his left foot, through Axworthy into the back of the Kerry net.

Harps much the better of the sides pressed on, Wara headed over another chance this time a dangerous free from flood, Watson later on tried from close range but Ethan Kos stretched well to block the danger.

Inside the final twenty minutes, Kerry had chances Ronan Teahan with a half shot blocked by Wara, before Cian Brosnan headed wide, Harps meanwhile had an Aaron McLaughlin effort blocked by a Kerry defender, before he lobbed Axworthy who was out of his goal, but the shot was over the bar.

Kerry stayed pressing and from a deflection forced a corner, Cian Brosan whipped it in and up went Samuel Aladesanusi, to head to the net, Kelly left in no man's land as the home side struck late.

But we had time left for more drama, in the fifth minute of four added on, Flood whipped a free in, Daithi McCallion got a touch on, but BJ Banda, the cult hero for Harps, headed home the winner, his first goal since his return to massive scenes from the Harps squad.

After the whistle blew for full time, a brawl between the players occurred, some hand bags but Axworthy was shown a second yellow afterwards and Harps substitute keeper Oisin Cooney was also booked.

    Game on in Tralee

  • Teams are out, Kerry will kick us off

  • The rain has arrived

  • It was a much needed result, as their last win came in another dramatic win this time to Longford at the start of June, they had lost two games after that, but a draw and win in their last two games does see them playing with confidence in the league.

  • When I say dramatic I mean that, they went behind early then equalised, but conceded minutes later to go behind again. A penalty before the break tied the game at halftime before they took the lead just on the hour mark. But again almost instantly we had another goal this time for Cobh, but Harps got the fourth and deciding goal inside the final 20 minutes to take the win.

  • Harps made the pot for the second round of the FAI Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Kilbarrack United on Friday evening, while their last outing in the league was a dramatic 4-3 win over Cobh on home soil.

  • Harps also secured progress to the second round of the cup, another tie against non league opposition, has them a certainty of making the quarter finals, but to the league and promotion is still on the cards, five points away from Bray in fifth, they need to win games like these if they are to try fight to go back up.

  • Where better to start than the only side not to beat them this season, Harps left with a 1-1 draw earlier in the year, a game that was largely free flowing but one that Dave Rogers felt Harps should have won.

  • That game last week can boost confidence that the tide is slowly turning for this young Kerry side, a team losing and gaining players due to the nature of their amateur status, they have had plenty of change this season, but now need some wins under their belts to see the season out.

  • Kerry had a famous win in the cup last week over Ringmahon Rangers, but it was difficult, probably one of the poorest showings they had but it still resulted in a win, they now want to turn around and come out to a better showing against fellow First Division side Harps.

  • Finn Harps have an unchanged Starting XI from last weeks win in Kilbarrack, Tim Hiemer remains sidelined due to injury so Rory Kelly makes a league debut

  • Kerry make three changes from the last night against Ringmahon, Daniek Okwute was a knock and will sit out, Ronan Teahan and Nathan Gleeson drop to the bench, Kevin Williams, Ryan Kelliher and Rob Vasiu all in

  • A warm welcome to Mounthawk Park, home of Kerry FC as they face Finn Harps, a breezy evening ahead, the rain has subsided but we may get a few showers
