Ireland suffer French Blues in World Cup Warmup

Ireland suffered a 0-3 defeat at the hands of France in their final friendly before their World Cup campaign.

A solid first-half performance from Ireland was quickly undone at the brink of half-time, Maelle Lakrar and Eugenie Le Sommer scoring in quick-fire succession to deliver a hammer blow to Vera Pauw’s side. Lakrar netted again in the second-half as France shifted into first gear, as Les Bleus saw out a comfortable win in front of a sold-out Tallaght Stadium.

Ireland enjoyed a strong start to the game, content to sit back and watch France dawdle as they continuously struggled to find the space required to muster up any real chances of quality.

There was short-lived ecstasy from the crowd when in the 15th minute Sinead Farrelly flicked on a header from a goal-kick that left Kyra Carusa through on goal. Moments before Carusa slotted home past Peyraud-Magnin the flag was raised as the cheers from the South stand quickly faded. Replays showed that Carusa was in fact onside, played in by Sakina Karchaoui.

Ireland continued to probe and suffocate the French midfield, as striker Eugenie Le Sommer began to cut an increasingly frustrated figure, the Lyon forward left continuously isolated and unable to involve herself in play.

Les Bleus’ best chance of the opening half-hour came when Amber Brosnan misjudged the path of a looping-through ball intended for Selma Bacha. Brosnan exited her box and was left in no man’s land as Bacha rounded her, Brosnan finding herself fortunate that Bacha was unable to muster up a generous-enough angle from the left side of the box, the full-back’s shot rippling off the side netting.

Vera Pauw would have been worried to see Katie McCabe trudge off the pitch in the first half as the captain was replaced by Izzy Atkinson, her removal from play presumably a precautionary measure rather than a forced hand.

Ireland suffered a cruel end to the first half given the amount of promising play put in up to that point, France netting two goals at the brink of half-time to leave their opposition shell-shocked.

The first goal came as Maelle Lakrar outmuscled Atkinson on the right wing and proceeded to drill a cross into the Irish box. Heather Payne lunged to get the ball out of play but her clearance fell straight back to Lakrar who finished past a rather bamboozled Brosnan in net.

The second came just a minute later, The French clearly enjoying a gust of momentum as a neat passing move was finished off by Kenza Dali threading a ball through to the feet of Le Sommer who produced a deadly finish from twelve yards out into the top right corner.

From that point to full time France evidently shifted a gear, playing with a new-found confidence and pinning Ireland back in their third with ease. Karura netted again in the second half, finding herself in acres of space during a French corner, heading home powerfully to put the game out of sight.

The result will undoubtedly prompt questions of what Ireland’s strongest starting XI really is-given Pauw’s affirmation that this would be the team to start in Brisbane against Colombia should the performance be satisfactory.

  • 61'

And it's 3! Lakrar finds herself in acres of space and produces a strong header from a French corner to put the game out of sight.

  • 57'

Pauw looks to be growing increasingly frustrated as Ireland struggle to progress the ball from the back, France clearly having moved up a gear as they suffocate Ireland in their own half.

  • 57'

Pauw looks to be growing increasingly frustrated as Ireland struggle to progress the ball from the back, France clearly having moved up a gear as they suffocate Ireland in their own half.

  • 51'

France looked to have entered a bit of a groove since half-time, knocking the ball around with a new-found freedom while Ireland look that bit less compact.

  • 46'

The action gets back underway in Tallaght!

  • Half-time: Ireland 0-2 France.

  • 45'

Disaster strikes for Ireland as France makes it two. A tidy passing move is finished off nicely as Kenza Dali threads a ball into the box, Le Sommer latching onto the pass and producing a clinical finish into the top-right corner.

  • 45'

And the deadline is broken at the brink of half-time! Atkinson is outmuscled by Lakrar and squares a cross into the box. Heather Payne attempts to clear the ball but it falls straight back to Lakrar, beating a flat-footed Amber Brosnan to make it 0-1 for the visitors.

  • 42'

Louise Quinn gets up well to clear a cross from six yards out that was destined for the head of the rising Le Sommer.

  • 37'

France are struggling to find their feet as they progress the ball into the latter thirds, an intricate passing move failing to materialise as Geyoro\'s heavy touch rolls out for an Irish goal-kick.

  • 31'

It seems that initial knock on Katie McCabe has grown in severity as the captain makes her way off the pitch to be replaced by Izzy Atkinson.

  • 26'

Courtney Brosnan gets off lightly with a serious lapse in judgement as she goes to collect a looping ball intended for Selme Bacha. Brosnan soon finds herself in no-mans-land and gets rounded by Bacha, the full back unable to find a forgiving enough angle as her shot from the left side of the box ripples Ireland's side netting.

  • 22'

Ireland have done a good job so far of maintaining a solid shape that has afforded France little to no space to operate in, Eugenie Le Sommer cutting a frustrated figure as the forward has been left isolated and yet to receive a sniff of the ball.

  • 17'

A bit of an injury scare for Ireland as Katie McCabe spent a few moments on the ground receiving medical attention but the captain looks to have been given the all clear by staff.

  • 14'

Carusa is hauled down by Estelle Cascarino as an Irish break began to form, referee Kirsty Dowlee showing Cascarino a yellow card.

  • 12'

Farrely gets high up from a goal-kick and flicks on Kyra Carusa who breaks through on goal. The flag is raised before Karusa slots the ball into the back of the net, but replays look to show Karusa was in fact on side!

  • 7'

A few minutes in and France have enjoyed the majority of possession and look to be trying to force play through the wings via Grace Geyoro and Kenza Dali.

  • 1'

And France get the action underway in Tallaght!

  • France come into the clash ranked fifth in the world. They have enjoyed a positive start to life since Hervé Renard's appointment as manager in March, taking two wins from two games.

  • The mood in the Irish camp has been undoubtedly dampened by manager Vera Pauw being thrust into the spotlight again regarding allegations of misconduct from her spell as Houston Dash manager between November 2017 and September 2018. A recent article published by The Athletic featured anonymous sources that included players and staff that claimed Pauw created a harmful culture during her time in Houston. Pauw vehemently denied these allegations at an FAI press conference: "I'm afraid it will follow me during my life and that has been the agenda,” she said. “Of course I have spoken to the leading [Ireland] players and they all said, they came individually to me and said they have my back. I have asked specifically if they have ever experienced anything. And they said no, never. “We have worked so hard to get there. They do everything to be ready.” Pauw has also been backed by captain Katie McCabe wo has acknowledged the timing of the article has taken a dent on the camp's mood: "I can't answer for each and every player. Of course Vera has a style of management that we're used to now over the last two years…She pushes me and I push her.” We know both of our hearts are in the right place in terms of what works best for the Ireland women’s national team going forward. And again, of course the article timing is not great but our full focus will be France tomorrow."

  • Ireland's last match came against Zambia two weeks ago, Amber Barret striking twice to mask the cracks of what was an otherwise shaky and unconvincing performance from the hosts. Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan were both rested for the fixture and each return to the starting XI tonight, the squad expected to largely mirror that of the opening World Cup clash against Colombia in a fortnight.

  • Evening folks and welcome along to tonight's match coverage of Ireland vs France. The Girls in Green play their final friendly match before they jet off to Australia and embark on their first ever World Cup campaign.
