Match Report

Galway Dominate Dundalk in Huge Cup Upset

Galway United produced the performance of the season with the shock of the FAI Cup as not did they beat, they simply dumped Dundalk out of the competition with ruthless ambition in a cup tie that will live long in the memory of all that witnessed the contest.

Four first half goals left Dundalk shellshocked of a blitz that the Tribesmen bestowed them and it shows how they are already well equipped to hold their own in the Premier Division next season.

For Dundalk, this was simply a disaster, with their European ticket ripped up in terms of their League position the cup was the clubs the last chance of a standby for the flight. Tonight’s result dashes any hope of competing next summer on foreign shores and the prize money that comes with it.

Dundalk took the game to the hosts and had the first shot on target with Daryl Horgan forcing a fantastic save from Brendan Clarke to push it around the post. It looked to be a sign of things to come but then Dundalk’s game plan fell like a deck of cards.

Galway took the lead as a free kick sent into the Dundalk area was headed past Sheppard at the back post with Walsh sneaking behind to guide the ball home to put the First Division side in the lead. Moments later they added a second when a cross whipped in from the right and saw the ball once again come to the back post with McCarthy on hand to nod it past Sheppard to double the scoring.

By the half-hour mark, Galway was in dreamland and Dundalk were in tatters as they added a third with Bordens' set piece to back post was palmed by Sheppard but only down to McCarthy who slammed it to the back of the net.

Aodh Dervin who was instrumental the entire evening being the driving force for United broke into the Dundalk area searching for a fourth with himself and Robbie McCourt clashing and with Dervin going down under the challenge Galway was awarded a penalty.

Dave Hurley converted from the spot to put Galway four goals in the lead and put the tie beyond doubt before the first half was even concluded. Stephen O’Donnell did look to his bench to restore balance and bring creativity to his side but the damage had been done and some fans left before the halftime whistle. In a rare attack for Dundalk, Hoban latched onto a cross in the Galeay area with it being cleared by Nugent for a corner.

Dundalk had a fast-paced start to the second half with two shots blocked down in the opening second with Sloggetts' goalbound effort being diverted for a corner. Galway more contained still looked threatening Hurleys' cross into the area was met by Killian Brouder on the half volley but Sheppard well saved it.

The best chance of the half for the home side came when second-half replacement Lomboto raced clear on the Dundalk goal with his clever chip over Sheppard and saw the ball roll towards the goal only for Muller to clear it off the line. Dundalk did have the last sight on goal as O’Kane’s through ball to McCourt saw the Dundalk defender blaze over.

For Galway it’s a night to remember, for Dundalk, it’s a night of real reflection.

HALF TIME: This is probably one of the most unlikely of scorelines that you would have expected. GOAL: And Galway take the lead, a free kick sent into the Dundalk area is headed past Sheppard at the back post by Walsh and the First Division side are ahead.

  • 3'

CHANCE: What a chance for Dundalk to opening the scoring as Yli-Kokko's cross to Horgan sees the Dundalk winger strike with venom on the edge of the area that forced a brilliant save from Clarke. A good start for the away side.

  • 1'

KICK OFF: We are underway in Galway and United kick us off here in his cup tie.

  • MINUTE SILENCE: A minute's applause for Martin Moloney, the former LOI ref who passed away recently.

  • ARRIVALS: Here comes the teams! Dundalk in black and white - Galway in the Maroon of the Tribe.

  • SOLD OUT: Eamonn Deacy Park is sold out tonight - there was a massive scramble for tickets today.

  • REF WATCH: Tonight's referee is David Dunne. The Dubliner takes charge of Galway for the third time this season following on from their 2-1 win away to Finn Harps in February and their 1-1 draw away to Bray on June 2nd – a game in which he awarded penalties to both sides and sent off Rob Slevin for a second bookable offence early in the second half. His most recent game was Derry City’s 5-0 win away to UCD on September 6th.

  • GALWAY SOLO CUP: Galway have won the FAI Cup just once in their history, beating Shamrock Rovers 1-0 in the 1990/91 final courtesy of Johnny Glynn’s goal having lost to the Hoops in the 1984/85 decider.

  • THIS WEEK IN THE PAST: Four years ago yesterday – September 14th 2019 – Dundalk were celebrating EA Sports Cup success following a 6-5 penalty shoot-out win over Derry City at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium following a 2-2 draw. Six years ago tomorrow – September 16th 2017 – Dundalk also won the EA Sports Cup with a 3-0 win away to Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium with David McMillan, Patrick McEleney and Thomas Stewart all scoring.

  • ON THIS DAY: On this day in 1976, Dundalk drew 1-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven in the European Cup with Seamus McDowell’s 6th minute strike being cancelled out by Willy van der Kuijlen in the 75th minute. Dundalk were also in European action on this day seven years ago as Ciaran Kilduff’s 89th minute header earned Stephen Kenny’s side a history making point away to AZ Alkmaar in a game in which Stephen O’Donnell was sent-off.

  • BACK HOME: It is Stephen O'Donnell's first time managing against home town club Galway Utd and John Caulfield although he has only faced Stephen Bradley more in his managerial career (16 times) than Galway assistant Ollie Horgan (12). Indeed, Horgan’s Finn Harps side dumped St Pat’s out of the Cup at the first round stage in 2020 with a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from former Galway midfielder Ryan Connolly. His first game in management also came against Horgan when his St Pat’s side came from behind to win 2-1 at Finn Park on September 6th 2019.

  • IN THE PAST: Galway’s biggest win over Dundalk was a 4-0 win in the league at Oriel Park in January 2003 when Colin Fortune, Barry Moran and an Alan Murphy double ensured the win. Their biggest wins over Dundalk at Terryland/Eamonn Deacy Park was 2-0 twice in the league in January 1985 and March 1988.

  • ITS BEEN A WHILE: This is the first competitive meeting between the sides since October 2017 when Dundalk won 4-3 at Eamonn Deacy Park in a game which condemned the Tribesmen to the First Division. The last knock-out meeting between the sides was in August 2017 when a Jamie McGrath goal, a Robbie Benson penalty and a Kevin Devaney OG earned Stephen Kenny’s side a 3-0 win in the EA Sports Cup.

  • IN THE FAI CUP: Dundalk have gone on to win the Cup in both seasons in which they beat Galway in the Cup at Eamonn Deacy Park. The first came in the 01/02 season when Martin Reilly’s goal earned Dundalk a 1-0 win in a replay while they would also go on to win the Cup in 2015 having won 4-1 that August courtesy of goals from Brian Gartland, Richie Towell, Paddy Barrett and Sean Gannon..

  • IN THE FAI CUP: It is the 4th FAI Cup visit to Terryland/Eamonn Deacy Park. The first finished scoreless in February 1994 before Dundalk won a dramatic replay after extra-time in Oriel Park 11 days later. Two goals inside 5 minutes from John Brennan and Jimmy Nolan had Galway 2-0 up after 15 minutes of the replay but second half goals from James Coll (57), Joe Hanrahan (67) and Trevor Donnelly (84) saw Dundalk turn things around before Donnie Farragher’s strike two minutes from the end took the the game to extra-time. The Lilywhites would prevail courtesy of Mick Doohan’s goal in the 100th minute.

  • IN THE FAI CUP: This is the 9th FAI Cup meeting between Dundalk and Galway. The Lilywhites are undefeated having won 6 and drawn 2 of the previous 8 meetings. Dundalk won the first Cup meeting between the pair in March 1982 with Willie Crawley scoring twice in a 2-0 win at Oriel Park.

  • OUT WEST: This is Dundalk’s 49th visit to Terryland/Eamonn Deacy Park. They’ve won at the venue 20 times, drawn 17 and lost 11, including a 4-2 penalty shoot-out defeat in the EA Sports Cup semi-final in August 2015 when Daryl Horgan and John Mountney scored from the spot after Ronan Finn and David McMillan had missed. Of Dundalk’s 11 defeats away to Galway, they have only scored 3 times.

  • PAST MEETINGS: This is the 99th meeting between Galway and Dundalk – ten of which came when the Tribesmen were known as Galway Rovers. Dundalk won the first meeting between the sides 2-0 at Oriel Park in November 1977 with Jimmy Redfern scoring twice. Dundalk’s record against Galway reads P98 W55 D27 L16.

  • TEAM NEWS: Dundalk have named an unchanged side from that which lost 3-1 against Derry City two weeks ago. John Martin and Ryan O'Kane are back on the bench but Andy Boyle, Louie Annesley and Alfie Lewis miss out on a place in the match day squad.
