Kilbarrack beaten as Harps move on in FAI Cup
Finn Harps beat out Kilbarrack United 0-1 as Dave Rogers’ side head back to Ballybofey with a ticket in the FAI Cup round of 16 punched.
Many had touted the tie as a potential cupset, given Finn Harps’ struggle for form this season and Kilbarrack’s domination of the LSL last campaign, yet Harps were the ones who showed their experience at the top level as they navigated the ropey tie.
The first chance of the game fell to Killbarrack who were unable to capitalise as their shot veered wide of the post.
Max Hutchinson opened up the scoring, shooting on the edge of the Kilbarrack’s box before taking a deflection, leaving keeper Conor Ennis flat-footed as the ball rippled into the back of the net to give Harps the lead.
Things only continued to get worse for the hosts soon after, Josh Keegan forced off the pitch through injury with Gavin Guaghran stepping on to replace him in the midfield.
Ross Carrig’s side were dealt a hammer blow with the absence of Deiric Hyland from the squad, the striker having topped the scoring charts in all four LSL leagues last season. Kilbarrack’s absence of firepower without Hyland became apparent as the hosts failed to create many sizeable chances throughout the first sixty minutes.
Harps struggled to find their tempo in the early stages of the second half-Kilbarrack enjoying most of the ball but unable to summon up a strong enough chance to level affairs.
Rory Kelly strung together a succession of strong saves to maintain his side’s advantage, as tensions reached boiling point at Greendale astro, home fans forced to be escorted out by security following violent altercations with traveling supporters.
Matthew Maniskon made a huge block in the dying ashes of the game to ensure his side’s progression to the next round of the cup. The Ballybofey side take on Kerry FC in the first division next week, where they’ll hope to take all three points against the bottom side.
