Match Report

Cabinteely bag vital home win

Cabinteely claimed a crucial 2-1 win over Treaty United at home tonight in Stradbrook.

After a quiet first half the Dublin side took the lead when club record appearance holder Kieran Marty Waters opened his account for the season on the stroke of half-time.

Treaty gained parity two minutes after the break when a parried clearance broke to Sean McSweeney who drove it home.

Cabinteely almost instantly retook the lead when Vilius Labutis followed up on a Jordan Payne shot which hit the crossbar, to score with a diving header.

Both sides spent a lot of the first period sizing each other up with much of the early action taking place in the middle third.
The only moment of note in the opening half an hour were two opportunistic, long range strikes. The first came from Marty Watters, which whistled wide of the post, then a 25-yard screamer from Alex Aspil which clipped the top of the bar.
The best chance for the visitors fell to Kieran Hanlon who picked up a loose ball in midfield from Mitchell Byrne and burst forward but was leaning back as he took the shot and his effort ended drifting over the bar.
Just as the half seemed to be petering out Aspil got on the end of a long ball by Clark. Aspil then released Marty Waters whose clever run got him in behind the away defence and he coolly slotted the ball into the net from a tight angle.

The managers must have lit a fuse at half time as both teams burst out of the traps in the second half.

Two minutes after the break the sides were level as Jack Lynch found Ed McCarthy on the right, whose cross was parried by sub goalie Harry Halwax, who had replaced Ben Clarke at the break. Sean McSweeney was in the right place at the right time and his shot trickled over the line to draw his team level.
However, the sides weren’t level for long as they broke quickly from a Halwax punched clearance and Vilius Labutis eventually finished to the net.

Treaty controlled the ball for long periods thereafter but lacked the quality to grab an equaliser. Cabinteely eventually held out for a deserved win.

  • Cabo are only one point further back, despite having lost four games so far. Based on performances so far they will be underdogs here this evening but they will definitely fancy their chances of picking something up here .

  • Treaty are five points from the top of the table and are the league's surprise package, with three wins, four draws and one defeat all season, with their loss coming in a high scoring encounter to promotion-chasing UCD.

  • Hello and welcome to Final Whistle.ie's coverage of Cabinteely and Treaty United, I'm Michael Keaveny I'll be your eyes and ears for the evening.
