Athlone Unbeaten After Three Of The Best In Lissywollen
Athlone Town came away from their home opener with all three points after beating Finn Harps 3-1 in Lissywollen tonight.
Both sides exchanged good chances in the opening ten. After just five minutes both Isaie Louis and Jamar Campion Hinds came close but to no avail. At the other end, Ryan Flood was denied at close range by Enda Minogue.
After the first ten the game quietened down a bit. Both sides exchanged control but it took until the brink of half time for the breakthrough to come.
A Harps throw in from the right came to Okwuy Okwute and in an attempt to win the ball, Noah Van Geenen fouled him from behind. Ryan Rainey stepped up and scored from the spot for the second week in a row.
Athlone started strong out of the break however and equalised in the 49th minute. Campion Hinds crossed from the left and Aaron Connolly met it but was denied by good defending. The ball fell to Oisin Duffy at the back stick however and he tied it up.
Athlone were clearly starting to turn the screw and in the 66th minute, they followed up on the equaliser. A cross from the left wasn’t dealt with well by Harps keeper Tim-Oliver Hiemer and the ball fell to Donal Curtin. The right back took his time, picked his spot and slotted in.
Athlone looked for the killer-blow the rest of the way but couldn’t find it until injury time. Harps applied some pressure, but to no avail.
In the 91st minute Campion Hinds picked up the ball in the left hand side of the box. He managed to squeeze it past Hiemer via a deflection to make it game, set and match.
Athlone ultimately follow up last week's win with another 3-1 win and at this early stage, could be a tough team to play. They travel to Wexford next week with hopes of continuing this good start.
Harps on the other hand could’ve started better than back-to-back losses. They host Bray next week, where a win may feel like a must.
