Match Report

Seventh Heaven for Athlone

As she has been so often this season Emily Corbet was the toast of another Athlone Town success with FAI Intermediate cup finalists Whitehall Rangers at the receiving end of her hat-trick with Roisin Molloy, Gillian Keenan, Kellie Brennan & substitute Kayleigh Shine also among the goalscorers.

Whitehall defened resolutely for the opening exchanges and it took the visitors almost half an hour to break the deadlock through the Laois youngster before she doubled the lead a few minutes before the break.

That blow to the home sides chances was compounded when the final attack of the half saw the ball ricochet around before it fell at the feet of Roisin Molloy who made no mistake and found the back of the net to give the WNL side a three goal cushion at the break.

Any hopes of a comeback were killed off in the early exchanges of the second half when the Midlanders hit two quick goals back to back a quarter of an hour into the second period. Gillian Keenan scored before Corbet secured her hat trick.

A strike from Kellie Brennan made it six before Athlone made it seven right at the death of the game through substitute Kayleigh Shine. Athlone Town will be in the draw for the Quarter Finals while Rangers have the small matter of the FAI Intermediate Cup Final to look forward to in the coming weeks.
