Match Report
Pea’s held to draw by Wexford
Peamount United dropped their first points of the season after a 2-2 draw with Wexford Youths at PRL Park today.
Two first half goals from Megan Smith-Lynch and Aine O’Gorman gave Peamount the lead. However, Wexford managed to pull it back level late on through goals from Nicola Sinnott and Kylie Murphy.
Wexford were the last team to take points off Peamount and they have done it again.
A slight delay to kick-off certainly didn’t deter any of the players. A frantic start saw the home side draw first blood through Megan Smyth-Lynch. The winger connected with a cross wonderfully and found the back of the Wexford net via the right-hand post.
What followed was a battle all around the pitch with plenty of heavy tackles going in from both sides which saw several players having to receive attention. It was a surprise that only one yellow card was issued all game.
Peamount’s second came in added time in the first half. Aine O’Gorman cut inside from the right and let fly. Her shot bounced down off the crossbar and over the line as she put her side two ahead.
Going into halftime Wexford had struggled to create any clear cut chances and did not test Naoisha McAloon in the Peamount goal.
The start of the second half saw both sides struggle to find any rhythm in their play and neither created any real chances.
Naoisha McAloon was forced to make a number of excellent saves in an attempt to keep her clean sheet intact.
However, the away side pulled one back after 76 minutes through Nicola Sinnott. The defender got her head onto the end of a corner and gave her side a fighting chance.
Wexford continued to knock on the door and eventually drew themselves level with 88 minutes on the clock when Kylie Murphy’s effort from a brilliant cross went over the line.
McAloon popped up again late on with a wonderful save to keep her side level.
Peamount will be disappointed that they could not hold onto their lead. Their goals conceded was doubled tonight after two were put past them.
Wexford on the other hand will be delighted that they could come back and get a point against the league leaders.
