Kelly and Hoban on target in Dundalk win
Dundalk picked up their second win of the season thanks to goals from Daniel Kelly and Patrick Hoban, while UCD is still looking for their first win of the season after a comfortable 2-0 win at Oriel Park.
Although UCD threatened at times, Stephen O'Donnell's side had large periods of control of the game in a scoreline that could have been much higher due to the crossbar and in-form UCD goalkeeper Lorcan Healy making many crucial saves.
Dundalk began to determine the tone of the game early on with a succession of attacking phases of play, with Stephen Bradley getting the first chance of the game with his header from a Patrick Hoban cross clattered off the crossbar. For the visitors, Jack Keaney's free-kick was deflected for a corner, giving them a rare sight of goal.
Mark Connolly's excellent pass into Patrick Hoban, who then turned the ball into the path of the onrushing Daniel Kelly, was to lead to the North Louth men's first goal. It didn't appear that Kelly would win the race for the ball, but with a brilliant chip, he managed to place it over Healy and into the net.
Robbie Benson ghosted into the area with a brilliant move as Patrick Hoban fired in a pinpoint cross, with Benson's resulting header again going off the goal frame as it appeared Dundalk would add to their tally. Colm Whelan, the Irish Under 21 international, appeared to have a chance to restore parity just before halftime, but Andy Boyle cleared the danger just in time.
The home side would double their lead thanks to a magnificent high cross from Lewis Macari, who crossed it to the back post for Hoban, who finished the move brilliantly with his left foot. Dylan Duffy struck a well-struck free-kick for the students, but it was well stopped by Sheppard.
The game was well-managed by O'Donnell's team, who saw it through, which would have irritated Andy Meyler's team because Dundalk for large amounts of time controlled the tempo and possession of the ball. In Oriel, it's no April Fool's joke, as the team claim three more home points.
