Match Report
Saints Smith and Darragh ‘burns Dundalk
Matty Smith's second-half strike and a fantastic chip from match winner Darragh Burns were the crucial moments in a tense Semi-Final that booked St. Patricks Athletic a date for the Aviva Stadium FAI Cup Final as they overcame Dundalk at Inchicore beating them 3-1.
The Saints took the lead with a first-half strike from Billy King that was cancelled out by Dundalk's Patrick Hoban. Smith and Burns' fantastic efforts, however, settled the tie in a thrilling contest in Dublin.
In what was an end-to-end tie that was frantic from the start, the early running by the Louthmen. The best of the early chances saw a terrific chip forward from Paddy Barrett saw Chris Forrester get in behind Daniel Cleary but Peter Cherrie was alert to the danger.
The home side took the lead as a poor pass back from Greg Sloggett was met by Billy King who latched onto it and slammed it past Cherrie.
Dundalk were to pull level thanks to Pat Hoban as the striker got the better of Abankwah and he slotted past Jaros with ease.
The second half was all St. Patrick's Athletic as they put the Oriel Park outfit to the sword. Burns slipped a fantastic pass to Matty Smith whose high curling effort left Cherrie with no chance at his near post.
Dundalk tried in vain to get back into the tie with Will Patching going closest with a half-volley effort that was excellently tipped over by Jaros.
The tie was sealed in the dying minutes when Burns was on hand to score when a clever ball played behind the Lilywhites defence saw the Saints forward chip the ball over Cherrie to send Inchicore into hysterics.
This is the first FAI Cup Final not to feature Dundalk since 2014 when tonight's winners St. Patricks Athletic defeated Derry in the showcase decider.
By all accounts, this will be a game that Stephen O'Donnell's men will be more than capable of winning, they are a side on the up unlike the outfit that headed off the field at full time, heads bowed facing the real bleakness of the season's end.
