WNL: Ryan named Player of the Month for April

Athlone Town’s Laurie Ryan has received the SSE Airtricity WNL Player of the month Award for April.

Ryan, who we spoke to on FinalWhistle.ie’s WNL Show last week; received her award at Athlone Town’s stadium in Lissywoolen.

The Claire native has been at the heart of the Midlands’ team form over the last month, with the side picking up their fourth win on the bounce away to Cork City at the weekend 4-1.

Ryan’s performances have involved winning more duels, making more interceptions, and completing more passes than ever before.

Upon picking up the award, Ryan is glad of her sides appreciation from their good form. “It is a massive achievement for the club, and it just shows we are starting to get some recognition”, she added.

“I am delighted to win the award. I was really shocked when I got the phone call. It is a massive achievement for myself.”

The midfielder was apart of a side who only lost to league leaders Peamount over the month of April 2-1. They won their respective three following matches.

The good turn in form has saw the club sit in fourth place and hot on the heels of Wexford Youths.

The captain will be looking to keep the momentum going as they travel to face league leaders Peamount this Saturday.

The side will be looking to overturn their narrow defeat to the 2020 WNL winners from last month.

Ryan was selected ahead of Galway WFC midfielder Julie-Ann Russell and Peamount United striker Áine O’Gorman.
