Shels aiming to bounce back with Yoyo

Shelbourne have upped the ante as the First Division race is already shaping up to be a battle as they announced the signing of UCD forward Yoyo Mahdy today.

The Saudi born player finishes a four year stint with the students where he completed his studies in commerce alongside his football commitments.

His Egyptian parents brought him to Dublin as a young child but the family settled in Limerick. The fabled soccer scholarship programme in UCD bringing the youngster back to the capital in 2017.

Mahdy has been a revelation for the Belfield side netting 32 times in 84 appearances for UCD. He featured in 24 games for the students in their first division title winning season in 2018 with 9 league strikes to his name during that season.

Shelbourne will be looking for more of the same from Mahdy who spoke to Shelbournefc.ie today about the move.

“I’m buzzing to join. I was talking to Ian a few times and it’s great to get it done and am excited for the season ahead,” he said.

“Last season the division was really competitive and this year it will be tough,” he added.

The commerce student said he is “looking to bring goals” and is someone who “enjoys link up play, off the shoulder and getting involved going forward.”

“I remember when Shels came to the UCD Bowl in 2018 and there was about 600 of them and there was a great noise from them.

“Tolka is one of my favourite places to play and it has been packed so am looking forward to that now,” he added.
