Duff departs Ireland coaching role

Irish centurion Damien Duff has informed the Football Association of Ireland that he will be not be continuing in his role with Stephen’s Kenny’s coaching team.

The Premier League winner, who starred for Ireland at the World Cup in 2002 and captained his country at the 2012 European Championship, is reported to have been disillusioned with the manner in which the FAI handled the showing of a motivational video prior to the recent international fixture against England at Wembley.

“I want to thank Stephen Kenny for the opportunity he gave me to coach with the senior Ireland team and I wish Stephen, Keith and the players all the very best of luck for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers” Duff said.

Duff who had paired his international role with the U17 Manager’s role at League of Ireland side Shelbourne is expected to continue in that role with the First Division side for the foreseeable future.

After impressing in Shamrock Rovers academy in 2018, Duff spent 15 months as Reserve Manager and First Team Coach at Glasgow Celtic, winning a domestic treble in 2019, and remains well respected within the club.

This week’s departure is likely to increase speculation that he might be a ready made replacement for under fire Bhoys manager Neil Lennon at Parkhead.
