Galway United confirm WNL teams for 2023

Galway United have this afternoon confirmed that they will be entering a Senior Women’s, Under 17 and Under 19 girls team into the domestic leagues in 2023.

In a statement this afternoon they have stated, “Galway United are delighted to confirm that they will be entering a senior women’s, under-17 and under-19 girls teams in 2023, ensuring the survival and the continued growth & development of women’s elite football in Galway and the west.

We thank all involved in Galway WFC for the significant contribution they have made over the years.

Galway United will continue to be an all-inclusive football club, a club for all of us, and we look forward to a new chapter of men’s and women’s football in Galway”

Following the shock news back in September that Galway WFC were to depart the Women’s National League at the end of the season, Galway United had been exploring the options of providing a future for the women’s game in the county.

The news comes as a positive one for all parties involved, as a Galway United Womens Team will be a lifeline to players ahead of the 2023 Women’s National League season, currently sat in 5th in the table, their future may look a bright one going under the one club name.

Galway United are now the seventh team in the League to have both a men’s and women’s team, with Athlone Town, Bohemians, Cork City, Shelbourne, Sligo Rovers and Treaty United already having both teams in active competition.
