Ireland’s World Cup Dream Ends after Defeat to Canada
Despite a dream start for Ireland with Katie McCabe’s early goal, hopes of progression from Group B in the Women’s World Cup ended in a 2-1 defeat to Canada in torrential rain at Perth Rectangular Stadium this evening.
The result means Ireland will not continue in the competition past their clash with Nigeria next Monday afternoon while Canada have given their hopes of progression a massive boost ahead of their tie with group leaders Australia.
It was a dream start for the Irish as great work from Lucy Quinn and Kyra Carusa forced a corner off the first attack. Katie McCabe whipped in a zinger of a dead ball which evaded the Canadian defenders and keeper to settle in the net coming off the inside of the far post.
Ireland built on their early goal as McCabe once again burst into the box, brushing off the defenders but not able to direct her effort on target. As she was upended in the box, the referee just brushed away her claims.
Sinead Farrelly was next to trouble Sheridan in goal for the Canucks as her forward pass rebounded off Carusa back to the Gotham FC striker and she’ll be disappointed with the connection. It still had Sheridan scrambling to push it around the post for another Irish corner.
Aine O’Gorman, a late replacement for Heather Payne who picked up a recurrence of her injury in the warm up, almost got caught out when she lost her footing and Huitema hit an effort from distance which didn’t bother Courtney Brosnan.
Foreshadowing what was to come for the Canadians a half cleared corner was returned to the box and Gilles’ touch saw the ball fire over the crossbar to the relief of the entire Irish defence.
Canada would find the leveller deep into added time in the first half. Grosso centres and the outstretched foot of Connolly deflected the ball into the Irish net off the post to rip up Pauw’s team talk plans.
The second strike would follow early in the second half. Canada rang the changes at half time with the experience of Christine Sinclair and Sophie Schmidt called from the bench.
It was Leon who would find the lead goal, a cross into the box evaded the Irish defenders and the Portland Thorns forward simply guided the ball to the back of the net to break Irish hearts.
Ireland made their own changes around the hour mark introducing Marisa Sheva, Izzy Atkinson, Lily Agg and Amber Barrett to lift the energy.
With a dozen minutes on the clock when McCabe would lift the crowd to their feet. A mazy run down the right wing would see the captain beat most of the Canadian players before her eventual shot was deflected wide for a corner which Ireland couldn’t take advantage of.
Lily Agg would have the last chance to draw Ireland level with a long range effort as the game ticked over the 90 minutes. Canada managed to run down the clock and hold on to record their first win in the competition.

Niamh Fahey is the latest player to keep the Irish in the game with a fantastic block on Huitema's effort. IReland are running out of time to rescue their World Cup dreams.
Lily Agg is adjudged to have fouled Huitema as the Canadian threatened to get on the attack. A dangerous free kick to Canada on the edge of the box. It's cleared by the Irish though.
Katie McCabe almost just scored the most amazing World Cup goals of all time. A mazy run beating half of the Canadian players ended with her left footed effort being deflected wide for a corner. Canada clear their lines from the setpiece.
Canada have been pressing heavily and have had a few changes with back post headers but haven't unduly bothered Brosnan.
Sinclair found herself in space in the Irish box but her effort was meat and drink to Brosnan as she gathered comfortably.
Leon has put Canada ahead with a good finish under pressure from McCabe.
Brosnan has just rescued Ireland after a fabulous strike from Huitema after a defensive lapse from the Irish defence.
Some changes at the break for both sides as Christine Sinclair, Shelina Zadorsky and Sophie Schmidt all enter the fray for Canada. Abbie Larkin comes in for Lucy Quinn for the Irish.
Brosnan is all at sea for the Canadian corner as Quinn does enough to put off Gilles from directing her header to the back of the net. Half time in Perth. 1-1
GOAL. after good work by Grosso down the left for Canada, her cross has been turned into the goal by Megan Connolly. The sides are level going into the half time break.
Sinead Farrelly gets on the dropping clearance and hits the ball directly into the stomach of Buchanan as the ball eventually goes out for a corner for Ireland. It's been a highly impressive opening half for Ireland as the rain has arrived in Perth.
Fine minutes to be added as Lucy Quinn is again showing some lovely touches as she breaks down the right again. Forces a throw in before a little bit of skill draws another corner. Can lightening strike twice for McCabe.
Carusa is absolutely bossing this, another great powerful run from the San Diego born striker as she outmuscles Buchanan once again to get her strike on target but Sheridan gathers at the second attempt.
Great hold up play from Carusa draws the foul and a yellow card from Buchanan. O'Sullivan and Farrelly combine well to create an opportunity for the Cork player who sends it over the bar from distance.
Canada threatening as they cut through the Irish defence again but Littlejohn gets in to clear the danger.
How did she miss!!! Canada just blew a glorious opportunity with Gilles unable to get her effort on target after two Canadian players found themselves unmarked in the box when the Canadian corner is returned to the box.
Short delay here as Ashley Lawrence takes a knock to the head. She's getting assessed now but looks to be unable to continue.
Canada finally beginning to move with a bit of freedom now. Jordan Huitema has a long range strike after O'Gorman loses her footing but Brosnan is comfortably behind the effort to gather.
Ireland are really growing into this game as they forced another corner through great work from Carusa.
Sinead Farrelly has a crack at goal after her header rebounds off the unsuspecting Carusa. She doesn't get the desired contact but Sheridan can only push it around the post. Canada do not look comfortable at all.
This a very different Ireland performance from the opening game as Katie McCabe bursts into the box but can't force her effort on target as she appears to be bundled over but the referee waves away the protests for the penalty.
Katie McCabe has done the unthinkable and opened the scoring direct from the corner as Sheridan was unable to scramble the ball out of the top corner. 1-0 to Ireland in the opening minutes here.
Fantastic opening for Ireland as Lucy breaks down the right hand side and crosses to Carusa who forces a great save from Sheridan in the Canadian goal forcing a corner for the Irish.
And we are off in Perth. A big 90 minutes ahead for both sides.
