Athlone Comeback In End Of Season Cracker
Athlone Town grabbed a dramatic point as they came back from a three goal deficit to secure a 4-4 draw against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium.
It was a relatively quiet opener, with Rovers lapping up the majority of possession but failing to create any meaningful chances on goal. The Hoops gradually began to shift into gear, their first big opportunity coming in the 25th minute.
Jaime Thompson did well to take the ball on the turn and thread Jessica Gargan through on goal, Gargan drawing a strong save from Katie Keane. The ball rebounded back into play and fell to the feet of Thompson, who opted for a thunderous effort on the edge of the box, her shot cracking the crossbar before eventually being cleared by Athlone.
Minutes later, Lia O’Leary sent in a seemingly innocuous cross from the left flank, the ball eventually beginning to veer goalwards. Keane was left flat-footed in net as she watched the ball soar over her head and nestle into the top right corner, O’Leary wheeling away in celebration.
O’Leary’s opener set off a chain reaction, as Athlone-who had looked largely blunt going forward-hit back in near instant fashion. The ball was nicely worked through the midfield before Madison Gibson found the ball at her feet on the left side of the box. The American produced a brilliant finish, rifling her shot across goal and past the helpless figure of Amanda Budden.
All in the space of ten minutes Rovers went back and reclaimed their lead, the move starting with Áine O’Gorman who sent in a relatively unthreatening cross into the box that looked set to be headed clear by Kayleigh Shine. It was a poor clearance, the ball bouncing straight to the feet of Joy Ralph who reacted quickly to set herself up and fire into the bottom left corner.
Rovers maintained that positive momentum heading into the second half, O’Leay jinxing infield from the left producing a superb curling effort from the edge of the box that found the top right corner.
O’Gorman seemingly looked to secure her title as the leagues top scorer, firing home after a scramble in the box to seal her 12th and final goal of the season.
Dana Scheriff trailed O’Gorman by one goal before kick-off and she bagged her 11th of the season as she latched on to a long ball in the 70th box, darting past Shauna Fox and finishing past Budden to reduce the deficit to two.
Athlone continued to mount pressure on what appeared to be a rather complacent Rovers side, cutting the deficit to a singular goal in the 83rd minute, a messy corner seeing the ball come off Savannah McCarthy and into her own goal.
The hosts continued to look lacklustre in their play and paid the price for it at the final minute, Scheriff pouncing on a cross in the box to find the bottom left corner and secure the most dramatic of comebacks for her side. The goal also levelled her with O’Gorman as the league’s top scorer.
The result confirms a fifth-place finish for The Town, with all attention now shifting to the cup final against Shelbourne next Sunday.
Despite the poor finish, the game wraps up a largely positive first season back in the LOIW for Shamrock Rovers, having made their return from an eight-year hiatus they’ll be desperate for silverware next season.

Half-time: Shamrock Rovers 2-1 Athlone Town.
Three minutes of injury time to be played in Tallaght.
Goal! It's been a flurry of goals here in Tallaght! O'Gorman swings in a cross from the right wing that looks to be unpromising, Shine looking to head the ball clear. It's a poor clerance that falls straight to the feet of Ralph, who reacts quickly, firing across goal and into the bottom left corner to restore Rovers' lead.
Goal! A nice passing move from Athlone sees the ball worked to Madison Gibson on the left side of the box, the American producing a powerful finish across goal to level affairs!
Goal! Lia O'Leary opens the scoring! It's an odd one, O'Leary putting an in-swinging cross into the Athlone box that ends up veering towards Keane's goal. Keane finds herself flat foot-footed as the ball clears her head and flies into the top left corner.
A huge chance for Rovers! Thompson picks up the ball in the midfield and does well to thread Gargan through on goal, the full back drawing a good save from Keane. The rebound falls to Thompson, who opts for a thunderous strike that cracks the crossbar.
Sheriff catches the ball on the break at the halfway line but is left far too isolated without another Athlone player in sight. The forward's forced to go on her own and does well to win a corner off Shauna Fox.
Ryan goes down with a knock, Athlone's physio now tending to the team's captain.
A rather uneventful opening period in Tallaght, Rover dominating the ball but failing to fashion any clear sights on goal as of yet.
Rovers work the ball up to Gargan on the right flank, who sends a cross looking for O'Gorman in the centre of the box. The pass falls awkwardly to O'Gorman, who's forced to knee the ball goalwards, Keane comfortably colecting.
Action gets underway in Tallaght Stadium!
Athlone come into tonight's clash on the back of seven successive victories across all competitions. Ciarán Kilduff experiments with his squad selection-perhaps with next week's cup final in mind-making four changes from Athlone's 2-1 win over Wexford Youths. O'Neill also makes four changes to last week's line up against Treaty United.
Reflecting on the season’s end, O’Neill expressed his pride at the progress this relatively new squad has made. “The growth of the whole team from when we came together in January to play with the style of play that they are now, and how comfortable they are on the ball. Their intelligence and work rate. Their growth has been phenomenal. “Although we don’t have any trophies or silverware to show for it at this moment in time, I’m extremely proud of their growth. “There’s been some great progress there and a lot of players have come on leaps and bounds, so it’s no surprise that there’s a lot of competition there for the Player of the Year award. “As a coach, that’s the way you’d want to be at the end of the year. It just means that an awful lot of the players have done their work.”
“I don’t think she has ever looked at those little milestones or targets, she’s just the ultimate professional. She takes one game at a time and she knows what’s in front of her and that’s this Saturday. She’ll try her best, like she does every game to get onto the scoresheet for us.”
Collie O’Neill’s side come into the clash off a comfortable 4-1 win against Treaty United last week, Áine O’Gorman netting a brace. O’Gorman heads into this evening’s fixture as the league’s top-scorer with 11 goals, Athlone’s Dana Scheriff her closest rival with ten. O’Neill backs O’Gorman to come out on top: “It’s not like Áine needs any other kind of motivation,” he said speaking to club media.
Afternoon all and welcome to our coverage of Shamrock Rovers vs Athlone Town. It's the final match week of the LOIW and a win will secure a second place finish for Rovers, Athlone Town currently lingering in fifth place with the potential to move up to fourth.
