Impressive Ireland hold Portugal to scoreless draw
The Republic of Ireland secured another point in this qualification campaign holding a ten-man Portugal to a scoreless draw in the Aviva Stadium tonight.
Stephen Kenny spoke of his side playing ‘above themselves’ in this contest and they did so for much of the game as Portugal were left frustrated by their fruitless endeavours.
Ireland did have chances to seal the three points themselves but was left to rue big chances on either side of the first half.
Portugal took the game to the hosts early on, with sweeping attacks on Gavin Bazunu’s defensive line but for such a talented front line, Portugal only forced the young keeper into one save of note.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s pacing run behind the Irish backline saw Matt Doherty get back to force a corner that was cleared at the second attempt by Josh Cullen.
Bazunu, showing stature and maturity beyond his age; was equal to André Silva’s shot after a looping attempt from the Portugal forward was well saved at the front post, once again the resulting corner was squandered.
As the first half wore on Ireland grew into ascendency and looked to capitalise on some shaky defensive moments being shown from the away side.
Callum Robinson looked to continue on his recent goalscoring purple patch as he cut in on the left-hand side and seeing Rui Patrício off his line hit a high curling effort that forced the Portuguese keeper into a diving stop. Ireland continued to press further as John Egan went close from a corner despite the best intentions of Pepe to stop him in his tracks.
The best chance of the half for Kenny’s men fell to Ogbene when Robinson crossed into the area that met the forward at the near post with his header on goal went wide of the mark.
After the interval, the hosts continued to where they left off as Ogbene spearheading the attack appeared to have given Josh Cullen the perfect chance to put Ireland ahead but his low curling effort was well saved.
Ronaldo who was ever the threat was close to putting 'The Boys in Green' to the sword as a brace of chances went begging that on another night would have ended the contest. He latched onto an Andres Silva cross in the area but his header went wide of Bazunu’s post, his second was even closer as Ronaldo cut in on his right foot and the resulting curling effort whistled past the far upright.
The game would then tip in the scales once more for the hosts.
Portugal finished the game with ten men, as Pepe was given two yellow cards in ten frenzied minutes that saw rash challenges resulting in him being given his marching orders.
Despite having a man advantage Ireland couldn’t make it count and had to settle for a point as once again Stephen Kenny and Ireland are proving they can go toe to toe with some of the best.

Ireland are fairly turning the screw now and are creating some chances now they have the numerical advantage, can they make them count.
Well, this could be a massive turning point, it appeared that Pepe flicked an arm out at Callum Robinson and the referee gives him a second yellow card and he is off. Portugal is down to ten men.
That went closer than a lot of people thought initially, Ronaldo with an excellent curling effort that literally was inches from going in. He knew it and the Irish fans knew it, close call once again.
For a handball, Pepe gets a yellow card.
Danilo gets a yellow card as his running battle with Ogbene continues on the pitch.
That was some chance for Ronaldo but he couldn't keep his effort on target and it flies past the far post of Bazunu. We then had a pitch invader who went for Ronaldo and but was fiercely tackled by the stewards.

We are back underway and immediately Ireland has a free kick in a dangerous position.
HALF TIME: Both sides have had spells of opportunity and possession but Ireland will feel that they were the better side. You have a feeling that there is a goal in it for Stephen Kenny's side and Portugal when pushing forward look very dangerous. Ronaldo is always lurking.

Twenty-five minutes in, Ireland looking comfortable on the ball but Portugal beginning to hunt in packs looking to pick someone off.
It appeared Ronaldo got in behind the defence, however, he wasn't getting past Bazunu as he slid in at his feet to stop him. It was offside however and Ronaldo didn't look best too pleased.
