Lucan United advance past Killester Donnycarney in FAI Cup

Lucan United booked their place in the second round of the FAI Cup after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Killester/Donnycarney this evening. First-half strikes from Josh Ukek and Harry McEvoy gave John Doyle’s side a 2-0 lead at the interval before a penalty from Dave Mooney sealed the win in the second half.

The game was played in miserable conditions with heavy rain throughout, but considering the weather, some high-quality football was on display.

The front three of Gary Seary, Dave Mooney and Josh Ukek caused Killester serious problems from the off and it was some great link-up from Seary and Mooney which led to the opening goal. A give and go between the duo ended up in Mooney squaring the ball across the box to the waiting Josh Ukek who finished emphatically into the roof of the net to open the scoring.

Killester did enjoy spells of possession and some long-range effort, but lacked that clinical edge inside the opponent's final third.

On the cusp of half time, Killester Donnycarney failed to clear their lines from an in-swinging free. The ball bounced into the path of Harry McEvoy who finished with an unbelievable back-heeled volley into the back of the net, dealing Killester a killer blow right before the interval.

Gary Howlett’s side did grow into the game at the start of the second half and had their fair share of the ball but failed to break down a resilient Lucan defence.

On the hour mark, Josh Ukek was fouled inside the Killester box and the referee pointed to the spot. Veteran striker Dave Mooney stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards.

Lucan United were happy to defend their lead for the closing stages but were dealt a blow late on when Glen Hollywood was dismissed for dissent meaning he will miss their second round tie.

Killester also ended the game with 10 men after substitute Craig Giles was shown a straight red card also for dissent.

It’s a huge win for Lucan United who will have to wait and see who they draw in the next round of the FAI Cup.
