Sligo in control in win over Treaty
Sligo Rovers scored all four goals on the scoresheet against Treaty United in the Showgrounds this afternoon to pick up their first ever home Women’s National League win.
Despite a good start from Rovers it was the visitors who took the lead first when a Heidi O'Sullivan cross came off Leah Kelly and into the back of her own net. Aoife Brennan then converted freekicks either side of an Emma Doherty goal to cement a 3-1 advantage to The Bit O’Red heading into half-time.
The second half was a rather dull encounter with very little clear cut chances, and while the Limerick outfit pushed on to come back into the game it settled as it did at the break.
Down club captain Emma Hansberry through illness and regular keeper Kristen Sample in net as she was away on coaching duties with the Ireland U16s, Sligo fulfilled their absences adequately. Lauren Boles took the armband to marshal the midfield and Amy Mahon lined out in goals and while she struggled on long kick outs she amassed a few crucial saves.
With around 25 minutes gone Treaty captain Jesse Mendez was involved in a heavy collision that saw her injure her hand, but the Cork woman soldiered on through the pain.
Brennan equalized in the 36 minute from the set piece before Ireland U19 star Emma Doherty turned the game on its head when she was put through on goal just minutes later and rounded the ball past Michaela Mitchell.
Seconds before halftime then Brennan secured her brace, again proving lethal off a freekick and fastening a two goal cushion for Steve Feeney’s side.
Emma Costelloe and Michaela Lawrence threatened for Treaty in the second half and although they had the bulk of possession they couldn’t pull off something special in the final third to mount a comeback.
The result means Sligo Rovers now have nine points, while Don O’Riordan’s team have yet to grasp any this year.
Sligo will look to continue this form as they take on Wexford Youths next week in Ferrycarrig Park, while Treaty aim to rectify their situation at home to Athlone Town.
