Pea’s hit newbies Sligo for Six

It was a baptism of fire for new girls Sligo Rovers as Peamount United hit them for six in PRL Park this evening.

Goals from Dora Gorman, debutant Erin McLaughlin and a brace each from veteran campaigners Stephanie Roche and Áine O'Gorman saw the Pea's upset the fairy-tale start for the Bit O'Red in the opening weekend of the Women's National League.

Peamount started strongly, dominating possession in the opening period and that pressure paid off in the 20th minute when Dora Gorman unleashed a tremendous shot from outside the area to break down stubborn Sligo resistance.

10 minutes later, Erin McLaughlin added to that before Stephanie Roche blitzed the Sligo rear-guard,  scoring two In five minutes to go into the break 4-0 up.

Peamount looked threatening in the second half and Karen Duggan, in particular, was instrumental in their build up play. On the hour mark, last season's leading scorer Áine O'Gorman opened her account for the season before adding a second late on.

Sligo will move forward, taking heart from their improved second half performance and they will develop with further exposure to this level as the league progresses. For them, it is a learning curve and they will take a lot of heart from their performance.
